inquiringly.

Kay pushed up and put his back to the headboard. “She’s a model, very exclusive, and I was obsessed with her for quite a few months. I tried to flash my money about, but in the end it was almost like we became best friends, and in a lot of ways she reminded me of my sister.” Kay swallowed down his tight throat. Rochelle had been murdered as well, and he didn’t get to her in time either.

“I didn’t know you had a sister,” Mel said, the envy stark in his voice.

And she was amazing. “Roxy was the first person I thought of going to yesterday. I’m careful,” he added. “It was only the second time I’ve seen her since we came back from Paris.”

Mel nodded understandingly. Kay took a breath. “The traffic was awful, and we were at a standstill just after I drove into the tunnel. A couple of people had gotten out of cars to try and see what was going on, and then this man came stumbling, holding his hand which was covered in blood. He said it was hers, so I went to look. She was in the back of the limo, unconscious, and her shirt was covered in flecks of blood from the glass, but I couldn’t see an injury. Her breathing was labored, so she may have broken a rib.”

The smell. The screams. “Then someone screamed the tunnel was flooding, and people were running, panicking, and then I heard the Ursus, so I had to get her out.”

Kay swallowed. “She was semiconscious and knew me, but then I stood with her in my arms and heard the Ursus, and the driver tried to take her from me.” He closed his eyes, but it didn’t help. “The next thing I knew I was waking up downstairs. I don’t know how Lance and the others got to me in time.”

“We think it was Ali. She had only just cleared the tunnel when everything happened.”

“Ali?” Kay said, gratefully. “Is she back?”

Mel shook his head. “She texted Lance just now to say she was okay and would be back soon. She’s probably gone shopping again. I don’t think she has enough leather outfits.”

Kay nodded, unable to laugh. He didn’t know what to do. He couldn’t sleep, and he certainly didn’t trust himself to go out.

“I just don’t understand how I’m alive, and if he took Roxy, why? It makes no sense. It’s never happened before.” But there were a lot of things that had never happened before that were happening now.

Mel suddenly stood up and cocked his head as if listening. He pulled at the chain on his neck until the pendant dragged free of his T-shirt, and he clutched it in his hand.

“What’s wrong?” Kay jumped up.

Mel blinked a little and focused on Kay. “We need to go downstairs. Ali’s back.” Kay took a step to the door, and Mel caught his hand. “Let me go first. She’s not on her own.”

Tom opened the door, and Mel stepped out in the corridor, the sounds of the swords downstairs falling silent.

“Kay?” Ali’s voice rose from downstairs. “Guys? Can you all come here?”

Kay hurried after Mel and saw Ali standing near the front door as they jogged down the stairs. Gawain, Lance, and Lucan all walked into the hallway as well, and then everyone seemed to stop as every person became aware there was someone standing behind Ali, as if she was shielding them. Ali turned and clasped the hand of the person behind her and drew her forward.

Kay’s breath caught in his throat, and his heart flipped and simply stopped.

“Everyone,” Ali said. “I’d like you to meet my Tresor. Her name is Roxy.”

Kay stayed motionless for what seemed a lifetime while everyone recovered and went to greet Roxy. Roxy looked overwhelmed, hesitant, downright scared, but then her eyes met Kay’s and she opened her arms without hesitation. He ran down the remaining three stairs and nearly fell into them.

“Roxy.” He enveloped her, and she buried her head in his shoulder.

“What a day, huh?” Her voice was muffled.

He drew back from her and met Ali’s brilliant smile. “How?”

“You held me in the tunnel. I didn’t dream that, right?” Roxy asked. Kay nodded. “I remember my head hurting and then seeing people fighting with swords. I saw Ali.” Roxy’s breath hitched. “And then I saw what was holding me.”

Kay closed his eyes. She had seen them. Only Tresors could see them.

“I must have passed out because the next thing
