she’d been teaching advanced calculus to high school students.
Becky’s voice brought her back to the present. ”Normally, I would say stay away from all the high school dads. But Kaiden Smith's dad is showing up today, and he’s single and hot as hell. I swear, if my Kent didn’t give me multiple orgasms every night, I would spend a weekend in that man’s bed.”
Smith was a common last name, but each time Siena heard it, she was as excited as a high school girl seeing her crush. Ignoring the butterflies, she turned toward her friend. ”The last man I dated cost me a job at a private school. I’m over the dating scene. Mia’s little five year old ears pick up every word I say. I can’t bring one-night stands home with me, and the last man was a drug dealer.”
Kyle used to work on science projects with Mia and read her books at night. Siena didn’t see the signs when he stopped having dinner with them and coming over. Losing her job hadn’t been the hardest part of the breakup. Kyle had made empty promises to Mia. A week earlier, Mia cried because he’d promised to take her to Disney. Now her daughter blamed her for them not getting to go.
“Hire a babysitter, and spend some time at a bar. Preferably one connected to a hotel so you can have dirty sex,” Becky said.
“I think my vibrator will work just fine,” Siena replied, lowering her voice so the parents walking by wouldn’t hear.
“Well, if you change your mind after seeing Kaiden’s dad, I can babysit Mia for a few hours.” Becky laughed as she turned to greet a parent.
Nope, she was done with men—until she spotted Kaiden walking with a tall, striking man, a man who haunted her dreams at night. She’d moved cross-country to forget him. Hudson’s blue eyes burrowed into her with each step he took. No matter how many times she blinked, he kept moving toward her. She’d practiced her speech a million times, usually with tears running down her face, getting ready for the day she would talk to Mia’s dad again. But at that second, she couldn’t remember a single word she’d rehearsed in front of the mirror.
After six years, he still looked as hot as the day he kissed her before getting in his truck. Siena wasn’t ready to face her one true love. And it irritated her she would have to do it in a room full of people.
God, how didn’t I figure out who Kaiden’s dad was? For the past month, she’d gone to every football game. Kaiden was the starting quarterback for the varsity team, but she never saw him with any family members.
“Good evening, Kaiden. And you must be Mr. Smith.” She clenched her skirt to keep from reaching out and pulling Hudson into a hug and begging him to take her back. ”Why don’t you guys take a seat, and we can talk about Kaiden’s progress.”
“Siena?” His deep voice rattled her to the core.
“Yes, but please call me Ms. Davenport.”
He leaned back in the metal folding chair. “Is that how you’re going to play this?”
Kaiden’s head whipped back and forth. The teenager was trying to figure out what was going on. She couldn’t believe Hudson had a son. Maybe Kaiden was the reason he’d left her years before. So, Mia had a brother.
Every so often, when they watched movies about siblings, Mia would complain about not having a sister to play with. Siena felt a twinge when she thought about not being able to give Mia a brother or sister. That was another thing she kept buried deep inside.
Siena didn’t know much about Hudson’s family. She had a photo of him and showed it to her daughter. She explained to Mia her dad did important work for the military, which wasn’t a lie. She and Hudson hadn’t talked much about his work, but she knew he worked as a Navy SEAL.
“Hudson…I’m Kaiden’s teacher, and you came here to talk about him. I highly doubt you knew I was his teacher before today. Just as I didn’t have a clue you were Kaiden’s dad.”
“Uncle.” Kaiden coughed. ”But, I’d like to know how you guys met. I’ve never seen Uncle Hudson go on a date.”
She wasn’t sure why it calmed her nerves a tad to know Hudson wasn’t out pursuing women and that he was Kaiden’s uncle. Hudson still hadn’t taken his dark-blue eyes off her. She needed to look
