place, but now we can’t seem to stop from calling you guys, and even when we don’t call you guys, someone shows up to check on us. So yes, there has to be a compromise in there somewhere.”
Grateful that the subject hadn’t gone terribly, I changed it. “So am I ever going to find out how the conversation about my dick went?”
And that was when our waiter walked right up to the table.
Yep, he was kinky in some fashion because he didn’t even blink. The barest pause was the only giveaway that he’d even registered what I’d said. “I just wanted to apologize for how long the kitchen is taking. It should only be another moment.”
He gestured to our drinks. “Would either of you like a refill?”
Dakota was faintly pink and staring up at the ceiling, so I answered for both of us. “No, we’re good at entertaining ourselves.”
My suddenly shy boyfriend groaned, but the waiter only made the slightest cough that had to be covering the laughter that wanted to escape. “Yes, sir. I’m sure you can find endless ways to pass the time.”
Then he winked. “I’ll do my best not to startle you since you’ll be having such…stimulating conversations.”
Dakota actually snickered as the waiter walked away. “Tell me you know him. There’s no way he’s that relaxed and flirty with everyone.”
I shrugged. “I think I saw him on a dating app I joined before I met you. I’m not on the site any longer so I can’t look, but he’s really familiar looking.”
“Ah.” Dakota’s gaze started to get that unfocused look. “I bet that would be a hard way to meet someone since you can’t really be honest.”
I couldn’t remember him doing any books based around a dating site, so I nodded as I leaned back in my seat. “If I’m remembering correctly, he was vague but mentioned something about being curious about life and had the words open-minded entirely too often in his profile. I couldn’t decide if he was saying he was a Dom or sub or just generally curious, so I didn’t take the chance.”
I’d never craved the spotlight. That just wasn’t who I was. But my goals and family would always put me a little too close to the public and to curious minds for me to be careless with my needs and desires.
“Yeah, that’s going to be the hardest part of the series…finding ways for people to take that chance…what’s pushing them…” His voice trailed off as he started to pat down his pockets.
I smiled as a frown crept over his face.
He’d been so focused on our date he hadn’t even grabbed a notebook.
Luckily, his Dom was more prepared than that.
Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out the tiny notebook and pen I’d found at a stationery supply store. I was pretty sure it was meant for cops or something like that because of the boring, utilitarian look, but it worked perfectly for me.
“Here you go.” Dakota’s eyes lit up as I passed the goodies across the table.
“Oh, you’re wonderful.” He grabbed them greedily but paused and looked up. “But this is our date. I—”
“No.” I shook my head and smiled. “I don’t mind. Take a few minutes and write down your ideas for the series and then you can tell me about it.”
“But I’m not supposed to talk about work on dates.” He said it like that was the gospel of dating, so I had to assume Austin or Tanner told him that.
“That rule is just for regular people. I’m already your Dom and I know what you need. Take the time and then you’re going to tell me all about it.” I leaned forward across the table again and squeezed his hand. “I’m curious, so don’t keep me waiting. Write.”
He grinned and tightened his fingers around mine before releasing them and hunching over the notebook like he was going to pour the secrets of the universe onto the tiny pages.
I was going to need more of those.
Relaxing back in the seat, I took another sip as he frantically made random notes and single words that I was guessing were kinks or names. The words were too small to read across the table, but I was having fun trying to decide what he might be jotting down as the waiter came back with our meals, stomping just enough that I knew it was a warning.
If he was disappointed that we weren’t doing something dirty, he didn’t show it. His gaze darted back
