feeling was mutual?”

My stomach lurched. It had been unsettled for over three weeks now as my feelings for Jackson grew and I was faced with the hard truth. I knew that Natalee was right. If I didn’t tell him how I felt, I would regret it for the rest of my life. I took a deep swallow of my coffee, but it only added to my nausea. It took everything I had not to run to the bathroom and puke up the hot brew.

“You look a little green around the edges, is everything okay?” Natalee asked.

I nodded. “Yeah, I guess my stomach is just a little upset. This isn’t really an easy conversation to have.”

“Sure, I get it. Don’t you want to know if Jackson feels the same, though? You said it yourself; things have been different recently. There is something between you.”

“Yeah, great sex and a marriage contract. I don’t think Jackson has feelings beyond that.”

“But you do. You love him, and he deserves to know how you feel. Hell, even if he doesn’t feel the same, which I doubt, you still have an obligation to your heart to make your feelings known. You don’t want something like that building and festering inside of you.”

“Natalee, what if he rejects me? Then I have to spend the next six months in a house with a man who I know doesn’t feel the same.”

“Then you know, and you can start planning for your life after you leave here. You have to tell him. You just have to!”

We both fell silent as I contemplated her words. I knew that she was right. There wasn’t any way for me to pretend like the feelings I felt for Jackson weren’t real, no matter what lies I told myself. Switching from the coffee to water, I sipped at it and let my stomach settle. The butterflies kept getting worse, my feelings growing as I struggled with answers I didn’t have.

“I do love him,” I whispered.

“I know, and you deserve to be happy. More than anyone else with everything that you’ve gone through over the last few years, you deserve this.”

My heart raced. “All right, I’m going to tell him how I feel tonight.”

She squealed with delight. “Promise that you are going to give me all the details! And I want an invitation to the real wedding, got it?”

I laughed. “You were at the last wedding! I don’t think we will have a second one. What’s the point, we are already settled in as man and wife.”

“Come on; you know that your mother and his would absolutely love to plan a big ceremony.”

“I think we are getting ahead of ourselves.”

“Maybe you do,” she scoffed. “I think we are just playing catchup. You two had the hots for each other the first second you laid eyes on him. Not that I blame you, I’d climb him like a damn spider monkey.”

My cheeks flushed. “You know that’s my husband you are talking about?”

We both collapsed into a fit of laughter as the house filled with the warm afternoon light. Before long, footsteps outside could be heard, and Jackson poked his head in. The second he saw me, a smile crossed his lips, sending my heart racing all over again. In the months that we’d been together, that smile had never ceased to amaze me.

His farm manager followed him in, the younger guy looking at Natalee like a starving man at a buffet. Instantly I saw a blush jump to her cheeks as she looked down and focused on her coffee. I knew that there would be time to give her hell about her potential love interest later. Jackson saw the look pass between them and pulled me closer.

“Remember when we were shy like that?” he asked playfully.

I leaned into his taut frame as his hands found my waist and he kissed the nape of my neck. A shiver of delight coursed through me, my eyes begging to drift shut so he could carry me away into another adventure of desire. From across the room, I heard Natalee giggle, and my eyes flew back open. She’d found herself flirting with the barn manager, and I didn’t mind.

It gave me just enough time to turn to my husband and wrap my arms around his neck, tugging him gently down to my lips in a passionate moment of tenderness. I could hear the slight catch of his breathing as he started to get aroused. His desire fueled my own as I
