looked around to make sure there was no one else coming, and then he put her in the car.

“Drive, drive, drive,” I cried as he got into the front seat. She was in the back, sprawled out across Frances's lap, and I thought that there was a chance she would wake up. She looked halfway there, but the glassy eyes remained the entire way home.

“Why were you talking so much?” I asked him as he drove. “You were wasting time”

“I was trying to get her comfortable,” he responded, and I felt like throwing something at him.

“You could have lost us our chance,” I said.

“But he didn't,” Frances said. “Johnathan, you need to calm down. Everything is under control.”

“I know that now,” I said. “But I don’t think that you guys understand that I did a ton of work for this plan, and you could have screwed it up.”

“Can nothing deviate from the plan in your world?” Jacob asked me as we headed back to the ranch. I glared at him.

“Apparently not,” I said as he pulled into the driveway of our cabin. I was reasonably sure that nobody was looking at us, and then I heard the drums.

“Oh no,” I said. “The stupid drumming yoga.”

“It’s fine,” he replied. “We’ll go around back.”

“We can't; they’ll see us,” I said. “We have to create a distraction.”

“How?” Frances asked, and I turned around to him.

“It’s your turn to take one for the team,” I replied. He queried an eyebrow at me and then his eyes widened.

“No way,” he said when he seemed to understand what I was thinking.

“Come on, Frances,” I said. “You’re the one who hasn’t contributed anything yet.”

“Hasn’t contributed anything yet?” he looked completely unimpressed with me. “She’s lying across my knees.”

“Do it,” I said, and he groaned and gently moved Jenny to one side.

“You guys owe me,” he said as he got out of the car. Frances tore his shirt off and started walking towards the yoga class as we watched

I had chosen him because he was the one who could transform the fastest. For some reason, he could turn at the drop of a hat, while it took Jacob and I a little bit more time to do so.

Once he was transformed, we moved quickly. There was a chance he could scare the yoga class back over here rather than farther away, and we didn’t want to take that risk.

I took her feet and Jacob took her head, and quickly, we managed to get her into the cabin.

We heard the screams from outside and smiled at each other as we settled her gently on the couch.

“Well, that was a morning that I won’t forget,” I said once she was lying down.

“Yeah,” he said as he glanced at her. She was still in that weird glassy-eyed state where I knew she wouldn’t be aware of anything for a while. “How long will she be out?”

“Another hour or so,” I said. “I think we should have a nice meal all prepared for her. You know, make her feel more comfortable.”

“Maybe,” he said. “We should also make sure all the doors are locked, in case she tries to run.”

“She’s not going to run,” I responded. “Don’t worry.”

“How exactly can you be sure of that?” he asked, and I shrugged.

“Because even if this is a shitty option for her, it’s better than where she came from.”

Chapter Eight

I stared at her across the room. She was still pretty peaceful, but Johnathan said that she would wake up at any moment. I was certain that she would be angry, and I had prepared all sorts of arguments for her anger. If I were her, I would run straight for the nearest door and scream the house down. The worst thing in the world to me would be to be held captive.

Eventually, she started to move around and rolled over to look at me. Frances had decided to stay in bear form, and Johnathan had joined him. I didn’t exactly appreciate that they had just run out the door and left me with Jenny, but I supposed there would be lots of time to talk to her.

When she saw me, she blinked in confusion.

“What are you doing here?” she asked me. “Where am I? What happened?”

I swallowed and gave her the story that we had prepared.

“You, uh...you were in danger,” I said. “We had to get you out of there.”

Johnathan had assured me that she would be missing at least five minutes of memory from before
