Court of Midnight - Lucinda Dark Page 0,102

time after that, watching the proceedings down below as people flitted back and forth in preparation for the after coronation celebrations. It wasn't until I felt a chill down my back that I realized I was no longer alone. Turning back to the entrance to the balcony, I spotted Sorrell leaning against the stone wall there.

"Thought I might find you here," he commented, pushing away from the wall.

"Oh?" I asked lightly.

He approached quickly, not stopping until my hips were pressed right up against the stone railing and his arms were on either side of me, caging me into his embrace. "You've been gone for quite a while," he said.

"I've been thinking," I replied.

Cold, blue eyes no longer devoid of emotion met mine. "About your friend?" he guessed.

"Yes and no," I answered. "About what the three of you told me."

"You knew that Fae lived a long time, my love," he said.

"Yes," I replied. "I guess I just hadn't given it much thought." My hands slipped up the black and blue coat he wore. It gaped open revealing a snow white shirt underneath. I gripped the lapels and used my hold to drag him closer. "I've been a little preoccupied," I admitted.

"Yes, you have," he agreed.

"Everything's changing." My words dropped to a whisper as his head dipped and he drew dangerously close.

"You won't be alone, my love," he said.

No, I wouldn't. I'd always believed that I would be just fine on my own. I'd always been an independent soul. Now, though, it was nice to think that I'd always have someone. Someone to live with me, laugh with me, love me as I loved them in return.

As if he sensed the direction of my thoughts, Sorrell pressed forward and kissed me. My eyes slid shut and my arms lifted, winding around the back of his neck as I let myself sink into the great passion that I'd learned he'd been hiding from everyone—including himself, I suspected.

However long our kiss lasted, when we parted, I was left shivering and laughing as I flicked frost off of my shoulder. He grinned ruefully—so unlike him and yet becoming more and more the norm that it made my heart swell.

"We should hurry," I suggested. "It'll start soon."

Together, Sorrell and I headed away from the balcony towards the center of the castle—a giant throne room in which I'd once been paraded before the previous King Felix in the hopes that he'd kill me. All of that was behind us now. The King was gone and so was Tyr.

My head lifted as soon as we entered and I found Roan and Orion waiting for us near the dais where the castle's highest ranking officials—those that had survived the war and not been charged with war crimes—and the priest of the Gods waited.

"You made it," Roan said as we approached. "We were worried we'd have to go looking for you."

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. "I wouldn't miss this," I told him, the same words I'd said to Nellie. "If I did, I have a feeling the new Queen of Amnestia would try to kill me. Can't have her starting another war, can we?"

"That's not funny," Roan said dryly.

"Get ready," Orion announced. "Here she comes."

I hurried to move to the side, facing the front as the doors to the throne room opened and music began to play. In the time that we'd been separated, Nellie's makeup and hair had been perfectly restored. She lifted her head and held it high as a parade of people lined up behind her. The long gold and red train of her gown drifted across the stone surface. I could tell that Nellie had ordered her lady's maids to let it because as they followed behind her, they stared down at it with pinched, broken looks.

I smiled and lifted my fingers, flicking them towards my friend as she strode by. The skirts lifted and hovered over the ground, trailing behind her as if she were gliding on air rather than walking. The maids' eyes widened and I heard the gasps before they jerked their heads up and to the side. I met their stunned looks with a wink as Nellie proceeded to the front of the throne and knelt before the Priest.

As I stood there, staring at the delicate shoulders of my best friend as she was blessed with the water of the Gods and an ornate golden crown was placed upon her head, I realized … this was more than just the end, this was a new beginning.

For Nellie and her Kingdom

For me and my Princes.

For all of Fae and humankind.
