handbag and repair my makeup. I overheard Nick telling the driver this was his first and last wedding. It shouldn’t have unnerved me but it did. Hell, I don’t want to marry either, so Nick’s statement should’ve made me happy. The last thing I want is a husband to order me around like a dog and beat me for not having supper ready on time as my father did to my mother.

Satisfied I look presentable, I face him. “Do I look like I just had great sex?”

His gaze travels across my face. “You look like the hottest woman at the party.”

“Secret?”

The limo slows and Nick lowers the partition. I can’t look at the driver. We come to a stop and a representative of the hotel opens my door. His hand extends and I exit the limo, wondering if I should have waited for Nick.

“Ready?” he asks when he reaches my side.

“Yes, Sir.” I tuck my small bag holding my lipstick in his suit pocket and pat it, making sure it doesn’t leave a lump.

“Call me Nick when we’re in public.” The cinnamon streaks in his brown eyes sparkle under the bright lights. “We’ll hang out with the wedding party and dance as long as you like.”

It doesn’t escape me that a couple of women at the lobby bar turn and stare at Nick. I lean into him, smile, and wink at them. The lobby is luxurious with its high ceiling and creamy white marble floors. Nick leads me down a long, carpeted hall to a set of double doors with a large circular sign on a stand indicating we’ve arrived at the Pierce Wedding Reception.

“Mr. and Mrs. Zackary Pierce,” I read out loud. “I wonder what their first thoughts were when they realized it was too late to back out.” I glance at Nick and I can tell he’s not interested in this discussion. “How would you feel?” I had to poke fun at him just a little.

“What?” He looks at me like I’ve grown a second head.

“Relax. You’re safe with me.” I pat his back as if he’d choked. “If I ever marry, I’ll be fifty and ready to settle down.”

“Did I look worried?”

“Nice try,” I say, pulling the door open myself. “Shall we?”

Nick takes my hand and introduces me as we circle the small dance floor. Most of the guests either work at Zack’s brokerage firm or Silken. My breath catches when a tall, thin redhead, who could stop even Chicago traffic, walks straight at us. Her hips swing in time with the bluesy song the band is playing.

“Nick,” she exclaims, wrapping her arms around his neck and smashing her tits against his chest. “Looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of each other for the next month.”

Nick tugs his fingers free from mine and returns her hug. I’m doing my best to maintain the fake smile on my face.

She releases him, steps back, and looks me over from head to toe. “Oh, Nick, she’s beautiful.” She leans in and runs her long, red fingernail down my cheek. “I may have to steal her from you.”

“Not likely.” Nick’s arm goes around my waist. “Kayla Britton, this is Danielle Moore, the manager of Silken. Zack has complete faith she’ll keep the ship erect despite me.”

“Never say ‘erect’ in front of me,” Danielle says on a laugh.

I can’t help but join her. I’m not sure why, but I like her. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“I’ll see you two Thursday night. You have to meet my new sub.” She waves at someone and is gone as quickly as she’d arrived.

“Wow. Is she always so full of life?”

“No. Not when she’s at work.” Nick pulls me into his arms. “Let’s find the happy couple and wish them well.”

“Okay. You’re the boss.”
