Caught Between Three Billionaire Tycoons - Willa Hart Page 0,36

clutched his sister and tried to figure out what to do.

The change that had been racing across my skin suddenly turned into a flaring burn and I felt my skin split as fur ruffled across my body. I roared with the fury of the change and suddenly I was loping, cutting the distance twice as fast as before.

“Shift Egan!” I roared. “Shift now!”

He looked over at me and even though he was terrified, I saw the determination in his eyes. My heart swelled in love and pride.

My son.

Right behind him, Adara was shifting, hearing my command. Egan changed in seconds and they started loping toward the nearby trees.

Daire and the wolf were throwing each other around mercilessly. Blood was arcing across the cold ground as they turned the forest floor into churned mush. The wolf was massive, one of the biggest timber wolves I had ever seen. He was very thin and not as heavy as he might have been, but that hunger also made him desperate.

I didn’t know if I should help Daire or go after the children.

My first instinct was to go for the kids, so I changed direction. My last thought was that Daire seemed to be doing quite well and didn’t need any help.

There was a sudden scream from toward the fight that made me pause. When I turned, I saw Daire roaring in pain as the wolf clamped its massive jaws across his paw. While the pain distracted him, the wolf twisted and went for his throat. Blood poured through the air.

The wolf headed straight into the forest the way the kids had gone. He wasn’t about to let his meal get away.

From behind me, I heard Whitney screaming. My heart practically stopped in my chest. Too much was happening at once!

I glanced behind me and I saw Zavier shifting as he leapt from the porch steps, right in front of Whitney. I didn’t have time to look and see what was going on back there. I had to chase down the wolf and get to my babies.

The forest grew thicker and I couldn’t move as fast through the trees. I heard Zavier puffing like a train as he tried to keep pace, both of us running toward the high-pitched screams of the children.

What was happening? Had they found a place to seek refuge or were they on the ground, already getting torn to shreds?

Fear galvanized me and I started galloping even faster than before, weaving through the trees. My roar shook the leaves from the branches as I impressed my fury on to the surrounding forest and everything that lived within it.

If my babies were even scratched, I would see to it that every timber wolf on this mountain was killed.

Following the screams, Zavier and I got to the spot at almost the same time. For a moment, I was confused. I could hear the screaming, but I couldn’t see the kids.

The wolf leapt up, snapping. Then I saw them, Egan and Adara, climbing the lower branches of the tree. They were trying desperately to get higher, but they were so scared they couldn’t grip with their claws.

I advanced, growling. The wolf leaping up the trunk barely paid any attention to me and I found this odd.

Until I heard a low growl coming from behind the tree.

Two other timber wolves came slowly around the tree, stalking. They placed their paws carefully in front of them, edging toward us step by step. They both growled, lips drawn back over sharp, long teeth.

The gray one leaping up the trunk was the male alpha. His female and second in command had come to help.

I rocked back on my hind legs and roared like I never had before. My huge front claws swept the air as I screamed my rage at the wolves.

Zavier came up beside me and growled low in his throat. Both of us were so focused on the advancing wolves we hardly noticed each other, only glancing and nodding to affirm we were in sync to attack.

My eyes jerked up to the top of the tree as I heard claws raking at the bark. Adara screamed as she slipped down the trunk, way too close to the wolf’s jaws.

“Daddy!” She screamed.

I knew it was stupid, especially considering that Egan was already there, grabbing her, pulling her up, acting like a man and not a boy. The smart thing to do was wait for the wolves to spring.

But I couldn’t wait. I couldn’t do anything except
