Caped and Dangerous - Isabel Jordan Page 0,6
you promise that she won’t be back, and each time, she comes back. I think we need to contact the police this time.”
Greer sucked in a sharp gasp, and out of the corner of his eye, he saw Tony frown. Tony liked the kid. He didn’t want to call the cops on her. Neither did Killian.
But he let Greer think he did. Just for a moment, anyway.
“Unless…” he said, tailing off, waiting for her to take the bait.
He didn’t have to wait long.
Her eyes narrowed, and he was pretty sure that in that moment, if she had the ability to reduce him to a pile of ash with laser beams from her eyes, she would.
“Unless what?” she asked, her tone low and dangerous. Sexy as hell, too. But he didn’t think she’d appreciate that sentiment, so he kept it to himself.
“Have dinner with me. Friday night. We’ll discuss this.”
The look she shot him in return made him question whether or not she really could shoot laser beams from her eyes. He half expected his suit to catch fire and his skin to start sizzling under the intensity of her glare. He offered her his most winning smile in return.
“That’s blackmail,” she hissed.
“Boss,” Tony interjected, “I don’t know if that’s really—”
Killian raised a hand to cut him off, but kept his eyes on Greer. “It’s just dinner. One dinner. Nothing else. Even superheroes have to eat, right?”
Greer was apparently resistant to both his winning smile and his offer of free food, because she crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him like she might throw him through the wall. He was man enough to admit she could do it easily.
He was also enough of a pervert to wonder if he’d like it a little.
But even as angry as she was, Greer was a smart woman. She knew he could turn her protégé over to the cops and the kid would lose her job. The mayor did not tolerate scandal.
And she had no way of knowing that Killian was bluffing. He didn’t want to ruin the kid’s career. But he’d take whatever advantage he could get with Greer.
After a few seconds of intense eye contact (and not the sexy kind), Greer said, “One dinner. That’s all. One dinner and you’ll forget all about,” She paused, gesturing to the interrogation room they were about to enter, “All this.”
He offered her his hand. “You have my word.”
She narrowed her eyes further and took his hand. The feel of her warm, soft skin on his raised goosebumps on his arm.
Until she tightened her grip, that is.
It was a maneuver he did whenever he met a business rival—a tight, bone-crushing handshake, just to let everyone know who had control of the situation.
Even as the bones in his hands shifted uncomfortably against one another, he couldn’t help but smile at her. God, what a woman she was. All heat and strength and fiery spirit.
The smile seemed to fluster her a bit, because she immediately dropped his hand, her cheeks going red. “Fine. Deal. Can I see Bryn now?”
He gestured toward the door with a gallant half bow and a smirk. “After you.”
Greer rolled her eyes and muttered something unintelligible under her breath—he wasn’t certain, but he thought he heard the word “dick”— before she let herself into the interrogation room and slammed the door behind her.
Tony gave him a hard look, lips thinned in displeasure.
Killian flexed his sore hand, laughed, and clapped Tony’s shoulder. “Oh, come on, mate. Don’t be so dour.”
“Do you really think going out on a date with Greer Glenanne is a good idea?”
He snorted. “I think it’s the best damn idea I’ve ever had.”
Tony shook his head. “You’d best not trifle with her. She’s not the kind to take that lying down.”
Well, now that was rather insulting. “I wouldn’t do anything to hurt her. I’m not that kind of man and you know it.”
“Usually,” Tony said carefully. “You’re not usually that kind of man. But what kind of relationship can the two of you ever have if you’re forced to keep secrets from her?”
“Don’t rush us into a relationship, mate. I had to blackmail her into dinner. I don’t think she’ll be agreeing to go steady with me anytime soon.”
The words had been light, but Tony’s expression never changed. He remained dour as ever. “You know she can never find out about the basement, right?”
And with that, all the wind was officially sucked out of Killian’s sails.
Tony was right. She couldn’t
