Buttercup (Spell Library #10) - Helen Scott Page 0,45

on my cheek, and cracked a few more eggs into the pan, scrambling them as they cooked. I sat at the small breakfast bar area and dug into the plate of food. All of them were suspiciously quiet as we ate.

"What's going on?" I asked between mouthfuls of egg.

They all looked at one another like they were passing the buck of who had to bring whatever it was up. They would have to deal with it themselves though, I wasn't going to make this any easier on them considering the nervous vibes I was picking up from everyone at the table.

"Since I'm already in the doghouse..." Logan muttered before adding more clearly, "We think you should call your mom."

"What? Why?" The eggs turned to ash in my mouth, and it became hard to swallow. My mom and I hadn't talked since I decided to move out to Silver Springs. She didn't agree with my decision to move further away from home after things ended with Bryce and thought I should have returned. I wasn't sure if she understood how painful it would have been for me to stay there while I was trying to get over him. To drive past the Snow Hut where we shared our first ice cream, and kiss, or to go see a movie in the same theater I'd been to so many times with him. He was everywhere at home. It was why I hadn't been back since.

"You need to know more about your biological father, and I'm fairly certain your mother wouldn't forget a night with a demon. Just sayin'." Magnus threw a wink at me before taking a bite out of a slice of bacon. I'd never realized eating bacon could be sexy, but in that moment it definitely was.

"If your mom knows more than she's saying then it might be something useful for what you're going through now." Ausar put his hand on my knee under the table, and I swear it felt like his claws were puncturing my skin all over again in the best way possible. Electricity shot from where his hand rested, to my core. The distance wasn't far, so it had a strong impact.

I definitely understood what Magnus was saying. If her experience was anything like the ones I'd had with him, then there was no way she'd be able to forget it. Not that I wanted to think about my mom having sex.

"Fine, I'll call her," I said after a moment. Did I want to talk to my mother? Not particularly. She'd ignored me for the last few years because I moved somewhere she didn't like. To me, that made her kind of selfish. What happened to unconditional love between a mother and child? What would she think when she found out I had multiple mates? Would she shut me out forever? Did it matter if she did? As much as I hated to admit it, yes, it did. She was my mom. I'd been without her for the last few years and didn't want that to happen again, but I also wouldn't give up any of my mates to make her happy. They all looked at me expectantly. "You mean now?"

As one they nodded.

I groaned, letting them know what I thought of this, but went and got my phone from the side table where it had ended up the night before. I swiped the lock screen and scrolled to my mom's name in my contacts, hitting the green circle to connect us. My stomach twisted as the ringer sounded on the other end of the line.

"BC, are you okay?" my mother's quiet voice asked, using the nickname she'd given me when I was a child.

"Hi Mom, I'm fine." I chewed on my lower lip unsure where to start while the guys very conspicuously didn't watch me.

"It's been a while. Do you need something?" The question was a punch to the gut.

"I was wondering what you could tell me about my father?"

She sighed, long and loud in my ear, "We've talked about this before. I don't know who your father was. I was a wild child. You calmed me down. Didn't give me a choice really."

The words were the same ones I'd heard time and time again, but that didn't make them any easier to hear. "Could he have been a demon?"

This time instead of a long sigh there was a long silence. "Why do you ask that?"

"Just tell me, Mom," I snapped, before sighing and pinching
