Buttercup (Spell Library #10) - Helen Scott Page 0,13

seen him.

This time when Magnus reached me, both of his hands were free. They landed on my hips like branding irons, and I felt something stir around me, something I hadn't felt in years, at least outside of the book.

Magic.

I looked up at him again, unsure what to make of him now that I knew he was a supe. He could be a shifter, but what kind? Or a witch or mage or whatever the guys call themselves? He wasn't a vampire, I knew that, the man ran too damn hot to come close. What else?

"What are you?" The question slipped out before I could stop it. I knew it was impolite to ask, but the words were already out there now, and I couldn't take them back.

His eyes flashed red. "Someone who should leave you the hell alone." The words were spoken with such anger and self-hate that my heart broke for him.

Magnus pulled back from me and walked away, not just away from me, but toward the exit. Panic surged in my chest and I turned and marched to the table that the girls were sitting at, all of whom were smirking at me as I approached. I grabbed my purse and said, "I don't know why, but I need to go after him. I'll see you all later. Thank you for coming out and cheering me up."

Lupine and Iris just smiled wider, their expressions annoyingly knowing as they nodded. "Have fun, girl. Don't do anything I wouldn't do, although, there's not much in that category," Iris said.

"Are you sure this is safe?" Jasmine asked.

"I'll be fine," I promised before taking off toward the door. Shit. My tab. I was going to lose Magnus. He was here with others though. All I had to do was close my tab and find them. And somehow convince them to tell me where Magnus would be, or give me his phone number, but I'd deal with that when the time came.

When Rose came over to see what I needed I asked to close my tab and she quickly ran my card. I was almost on my way when Logan stopped me.

Dammit the man was beautiful. I wanted to bite his lips, to feel his cool skin all over mine. I shook my head, the thoughts clouding them when I had a goal, one that I would see done quickly.

"Buttercup, I need to talk to you," Logan said, having come around the bar when I wasn't paying attention. Now, he was standing in front of me looking like a devil trying to draw me to Hell. His ear plugs glinted in the flashing lights like warning bells going off in my head.

Something was happening, I wasn't sure what, but I could feel the change inside me.

"I don't have time right now. Can we talk tomorrow?" I asked, as I glanced at the door, desperate to be on my way.

Hurt flashed across his face, and if I hadn't turned back to him when I did then I would have missed it completely. Why would that hurt Logan?

"Sure, just...Just be careful tonight, Buttercup. You're a precious gift that shouldn't be wasted." Well if that didn't make my heart squish happily then I wasn't named after a tiny flower—or a princess from the 80s for that matter.

"I will. Are you okay?" I asked carefully.

"It'll keep until the morning when I come by for my muffin," Logan said with a sad smile, one that didn't reach his eyes.

I nodded and reached out to squeeze his hand, but he was already turning away from me. What the fuck was wrong with me tonight? I was apparently just sticking my foot in my mouth whenever possible.

With my purse in hand I scanned the crowd for the men that Magnus had been standing with. It was Mr. Jawline that stood out, and as I started to weave through the crowd of people toward him, he turned and looked directly at me, like he'd felt me coming for him or something. As soon as his eyes landed on mine, I felt a pull toward him, similar to the one I felt with Magnus. Unease flitted through me, but I pushed it aside. I would figure it out later.

"Are you friends with Magnus?" I asked once I was close enough, trying to project my voice enough for them to hear me over the music, while also trying to ignore the gray-green eyes that were staring into my soul, and the perfectly
