Laurie buried her hot face against his shoulder.

"Well, I think there's no time like the present for your inaugural dip, Miss Laurie."

Her head shot up. "Now? It's broad daylight! What if someone sees us?"

"It's duskish," he corrected, tugging on her hand so that she followed him down the short trail to the small sand beach. "And there's no one else around. Did you see anyone parked at the trail head besides us?"

"No," she answered with reluctance.

Adam stopped on the beach, very near the water, and turned to her, taking her in his arms. "More importantly, do you think I would ever allow you to be embarrassed in that way, honey?"

"No." She still sounded hesitant, but he was already pulling her t-shirt over her head, noting happily that she had obeyed him and foregone a bra.

He stood in front of her as he undressed her, hoping that would make her feel a bit more at ease, since he was pretty tall and broad and would block most people's view of her—not that there were going to be any. Then Adam took her hand in his again and began to walk into the water, which was somewhat warm but not really enough for her.

"I take a while to get into water, apparently even when I'm naked and should really dive in to spare myself embarrassment, I suppose."

He stood near her. "Want some help?" His hands were already cupped on the water, as if he would splash her.

Laurie put her hands on her hips and said in no uncertain terms, "If you splash me or otherwise hurry me into the water—like you probably are used to doing with your brothers—I will get out of this lake, dress myself, and hike back to the car, where you can take me home."

"Wow." She was usually so easy going—which he adored about her—that he was amazed to hear her be so vehement about something so trivial. "I won't do anything like that since you don't want me to. I was just wanting you to get in with me."

"I will. But in my own time."

"All right, honey, no problem," he reassured, swimming around and surface diving until she finally dunked herself under the cool water and came to meet him where he'd swum out a little way.

When she got to him, Laurie clung to him. "It's over my head."

There was that evil laugh of his again. "I know. You'll just have to hold onto me for dear life, then, won't you?"

"I can swim and tread water if it comes to that," she replied pertly, and he tsked at her.

"I'm trying to be romantical, woman. Work with me here, huh?" he teased, and she blushed.

"Oh. Sorry." She tightened her arms around his neck, wrapping her legs around his waist. "Better?"

When he moved her, it was to claim her fully, all at once, which had the both of them gasping.

"Oh hell yes!" he agreed eagerly.
