Brick's Fight (Infernal Sons MC #5) - Carol Dawn Page 0,46

there.

“I told them to take the truck, and we would take my bike,” he says. “We’ll beat them to the hospital that way.”

I nod and follow Wolf. He stops to hand me my blanket. Now that the adrenaline is gone, I feel my face turn red at the fact that so many people have seen me naked.

“Thank you,” I whisper, wrapping the blanket as tightly around me as I can.

It doesn’t take long to make it to Wolf's bike. Then we’re speeding off towards the hospital. I hold on to Wolf's waist as I close my eyes and pray for the third time today.

Please, don’t leave me, my love.

Chapter Thirty

Brick

Holy fucking hell, the pain.

I really need to take it easy in the octagon unless I want to live the rest of my life in pain. This sucks. It has to be the worst pain I’ve ever felt after a fight. Coach is going to tear me a new one after this. I just know it.

“Has there been any change?”

“I think so. He moves his head and fingers from time to time. Almost like he’s dreaming.”

“It won’t be much longer now.”

Who the hell was stupid enough to come into my home while I’m sleeping?

“How’s she doing?”

She?

“Exhausted. She’s giving the staff a hard time.”

“I’m not surprised. When he got hurt, her constant fear was replaced with the soul of a tiger.”

“Yeah, Miss Jessa has been quite growly.”

Jessa?

Memories pour through my mind. Jessa missing. Coach dead. My parent's farm. Jessa moaning my name. Jessa taken again. Being shot. The panicked look in my woman’s eyes as I fell to the darkness.

“Jessa,” I say.

Or, I try to say. There’s something in my throat. Something is blocking my ability to talk or swallow.

“Did he just mumble?”

“Fucking, yes, he did.”

I recognize the voices as Bear and Wolf.

The next little while is a storm of activity as new voices ask me questions, pull open my eyes, have me squeeze their hands, and finally pull what I learned was a breathing tube out of my throat.

Finally, everything slows down, and I find the strength to open my eyes.

Bear stares back at me with a dopey smile on his face.

“It’s about fucking time, brother,” he says cheerfully.

“How long?” I ask.

My throat is dry, causing my voice to sound rough.

“Just over a week,” Bear says. “Do you remember what happened?”

“Someone fucking shot me,” I growl, sipping the water that Wolf was holding out.

“You very nearly died,” Bear tells me. “You got lucky in more ways than one. She was too far away, and the bullet didn’t hit you as hard or as fast as it could. Chains was also running toward her the moment she raised her arms, messing with her concentration.”

“Not to mention that the bullet didn’t hit anything vital.” I turn my head slightly toward the voice and see Trigger sitting near the window. “Which is saying something considering how many important things it could have hit.”

“I don’t know how,” Brick adds. “But the bullet missed your arteries, jugular, trachea, and spine. Doc seems to think you’ll suffer from neck pain for the rest of your life, but that’s about all.”

I take a minute to let all the information sink in. Then another thought hits me.

“Who shot me?” I ask. My voice is getting stronger, the longer I’m awake.

“My mother shot you.”

My heart races at the sound of her voice. My beautiful, amazing, strong woman.

I turn my head, ignoring the pain, and watch as Jessa stands from a couch on the other side of the room.

She looks rough. Exhausted. Unsure. Her hands are clasped in front of her as she slowly walks towards me. Even then, she looks absolutely beautiful.

“You almost died,” she says, tears pooling in her eyes. “And it’s all my fault.”

“Come here, baby,” I say, wanting to reassure her.

“I wouldn’t blame you if you never wanted to see me again.”

I struggle to get up when her tears start to fall.

“Jessa,” I say when moving becomes impossible. “Come here, sweetheart.”

“You’re a good man, Brick,” she says, backing away. “You deserve a woman who will make your life better, not land you in the hospital.”

“Woman,” I growl, panicking at the thought of her leaving. “Get the fuck over here before I come and get you.”

I hear Bear chuckle from somewhere in the room.

I don’t give a fuck who’s in here. The only thing on my mind right now is getting my woman within arm’s reach.

I watch as she fights some sort of internal battle. She looks at
