Brick's Fight (Infernal Sons MC #5) - Carol Dawn Page 0,24

see my daddy.”

I lose the fight against my emotions, and tears fall freely down my face.

“I’m taking you now, baby,” he tells me. “We’re heading to the car right now.”

His statement only causes the fear in my heart to intensify. Brick didn’t even begin to deny me what I want. I expected a small argument at the very least. Not instant acceptance. Now I know my dad's in really bad shape.

It takes us a little under an hour to make it to the hospital. I don’t think I’ve said a single word the whole trip. I tried to only focus on the warmth of Brick’s hand on my leg. It’s a small and much appreciated comfort.

The second I’m out of the car, Brick is there pulling me against the side of his body.

“I know you’re worried about your dad right now, baby,” he tells me as we walk. “I am too. But I need your word that if I tell you to do something that involves saving your life, you’ll do it.”

I look up and see the hardness on Brick’s face. He’s worried about both my dad and me.

I stop walking and lean up to kiss his jaw.

“If you wanted a kiss,” he says with a smile. “All you had to do was ask, and I would have met you down there.”

I stare up at the man with what I’m sure are wide eyes.

“Look at you, full of jokes,” I say.

Brick’s smile widens before pulling me back against his side and making our way to the receptionist.

“We’re here to see Andrew Millar,” Brick tells a middle-aged male.

The man checks his computer before looking up.

“He’s in the Heart and Vascular unit, room four-fifteen,” he tells us.

We thank him before making our way to the fourth floor. When we eventually walk into his room, I freeze.

My dad is lying on the hospital bed with a breathing tube down his throat. Multiple machines are beeping around him. And he’s not moving.

“Brick,” I whisper.

I don’t know why his name is the first thing that comes to mind. Maybe I’m asking for answers. Or perhaps I’m begging for strength.

“I know, baby,” he whispers back.

I look up and watch as a single tear slides down his handsome face.

“Are you his nurse?”

I turn my head in the direction that Brick is looking and watch as a woman in blue scrubs writes something down on her computer.

“Yes, I am,” she says kindly. “You must be Adam and Jessalyn.”

“How do you know our names?” Brick growls with suspicion.

The nurse just chuckles before walking towards my dad. We’re still standing by the wall, watching.

“Mr. Millar here may have mentioned your names to one of the EMTs,” she says. “I’m amazed that he had the strength to call an ambulance, let alone talk to one of them,” the doctor mumbles to herself.

“Anyway, I’ll go grab the doctor for you.”

When the nurse leaves the room, I slowly make my way to the hospital bed. The man on the bed looks weak, tired, and… well, dead. He doesn’t look anything like my father. My dad is a strong, proud man.

“I don’t understand,” I say. “He’s a decently healthy man. The only health concern he has is with his sugar. What could cause him to have a heart attack?”

“Heart attacks can occur in a completely healthy man,” a woman’s voice says from behind me. I turn to see someone walk into the room and stop beside Brick. “I’m Doctor Amy Brown,” she says, holding out her hand. “I’m in charge of Mr. Millar’s health while he’s here.”

“I’m Brick, and this is my woman, and Coach’s daughter, Jessa.”

I nod at the doctor and return my attention back to my father. I reach down and grasp his hands. Why do they feel different? They feel soft and delicate.

“Can you tell us what happened?” Brick asks.

I’m thankful, yet again, for Brick being with me. I don’t think I could process everything fast enough even to ask questions. I feel lost while my dad fights for his life.

“Mr. Millar called an ambulance around five hours ago complaining of chest pains,” Dr. Brown says. “By the time he arrived here, he had already slipped into a coma.”

I spin around.

“Coma?” I ask, even more frightened.

“I’m afraid that your father went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance,” she tells me gently. “They were able to restart his heart, but he slipped into a coma moments later.”

I feel Brick move behind me before wrapping his arms safely around me.

“What about now, Doc?”
