the curs they were.
Dakota shouted out in glee and jumped off of the hood of the car. She walked straight up to Bennett and pet his muzzle.
“So, you’re a wolf, too, huh? I guess our kids will be a mixed litter. Now let’s go call Nick because we’re definitely going to need a cleanup crew.”
He looked around the laneway. She wasn’t wrong. It was a warzone, but they had achieved their goal.
The serum, though now nonexistent, was safe. Dakota, though bleeding from a few wounds, was safe. She smiled at him. “I think I’m good at this protecting business after all.”
Bennett watched his mate go, glowing with all of the strength she had always possessed.
Chapter Twenty-Four
Dakota
Dakota, Bennett, and the docs were barely out of the shower and into fresh clothes when Nick and Gray barged into the house, making the sound system blare loudly.
“Turn this fucking thing off, Dakota,” Nick growled.
She rushed to the panel and keyed in the code, stating the numbers out loud so that Gray, the owner of the house, would know how to access his own home.
“What are you doing here so soon?” she asked, knowing he would have seen the mess of bodies and abandoned cars on the laneway. Thankfully they had been able to keep the fight from the house. There would have been hell to pay had they done any damage to the home.
And there was no way Dakota could afford the repairs on a place like this.
“Well, you haven’t checked in for a few days now,” Nick started.
“And then I got a bizarre call from my contact about the serum. I knew something had to be up, so we came back. I have a personal jet, so it’s not a big deal.”
Not a big deal? Who even was this guy?
“What about your wedding?” she asked. “For real, we have everything under control.”
“Everything?” Gray asked. “The bodies on the front lawn would beg to differ. Don’t worry, Nick called his cleanup guy. We never should have been gone this long. Besides, Blake and I got married at an Elvis chapel last night. We couldn’t wait, and she knew that the chances that we would stay put for seven days were slim to none.” Gray leaned in toward her, making Bennett growl protectively. “Shanti is super pissed at him.” Gray eyed his friend. “Fuck, Ben. Judging by the way you look, you injected yourself with the serum.”
Bennett shrugged his response. “I know. I’ve gone full Chad.”
Gray laughed, but Nick didn’t seem to find the humor in it.
“Are you fucking kidding me with this?” Nick roared. He was in his human form, but he might as well have been in his lion shape for all of the noise it made as it echoed through the house.
Dakota steeled herself against it. She knew that it was bad. Not only had Nick left her in charge of a house that was now a little bit littered with dead bad guys, but she had also managed to create not one, not two, but four new shifters.
Not to mention, they were was no longer any serum.
Bennett was a strong column of male aggression beside her. He didn’t like the way Nick was talking to her, that much was clear. She could only hope that he would keep his macho side hidden for now. She wasn’t going to keep her job, but that was no reason to annoy Nick any further. She had fucked up, and Nick was well within his rights as an employer to be furious.
Dakota did find the yelling a bit dramatic, though. She thought he could have gotten his message across without it.
“Explain yourself,” he demanded.
Dakota rolled her eyes. “You know, you’re never going to hire me. So I am not your employee. You can’t just talk to me like that. I am a person with feelings. You might be able to go all rah-rah with your other employees because they’re your family members, but you can’t do that to me. I won’t stand for this abusive kind of talk. You’re a tough alpha. I get it. I fucked up the job. I get it. But you fucked up, too, bub. This job was a lot more complicated than you told me. There was much more peril than you let on. You told me that I would be guarding a house and a scientist. Two seconds in, and we were attacked by some GIs. I wasn’t armed or prepared.”
She crossed her arms and arched an eyebrow,
