Trees and brush whirled past them, but they didn’t notice.
They had to get to the house.
Nothing, and Dakota knew this to be true, nothing was faster than a tiger protecting its own.
Chapter Twenty-Three
Bennett
Bennett had never run that fast before in his life.
That went without saying. He had never been a tiger before in his life.
Somehow, this just felt right. Of course, it was highly inconvenient that he had to have his first shift while they were under attack. It was also unfortunate that he had just killed men to defend himself and Dakota. It was sadder still that the first time he would go gallivanting through the woods with his mate, it would be to get to the house before Winchester’s people got their hands on the serum.
Bennett seriously doubted that the leader of the black OPS department had only sent one car with six mercenaries. There would be more. If he and Dakota were lucky, they would get to the house before the other goons that had been sent to retrieve the serum. Bennett knew that Vance had recently become a shifter, but his friend had only been injected the day before. Had Vance had enough time to recuperate before the attack? Could it be three shifters against an army?
His large paws were weightless as he ran with everything he had. There was no way he was going to let his friends be killed for a science experiment that was meant to better the world.
Beside him, Dakota was a beautiful tigress, keeping up with him. He made a note that if they survived this, they would have to go out and run through the forest together. It would be pleasant.
Finally, they made it to Gray’s insanely long driveway. It bolstered them, and they ran faster. It should have been an impossible feat, but he was a man who had turned into a tiger. Bennett’s definition of what was possible or not had to be redefined now.
There were no cars in the vicinity, and he couldn’t smell anything odd. Everything seemed to be just the way it had been left before they had gone to the market. They shifted into their human forms, and they raced into the house to deactivate the alarm system. At least that was still on. That was a good sign. Dakota made sure to set it again.
“Boys, there’s trouble!” Ben’s voice boomed through the spacious house.
Vance peeked his head from around the corner. He looked different. He looked every bit like a Chad. He stepped toward us, looking like the picture of health. It seemed the serum and the change had agreed with him. He was just as huge as Bennett. It made him feel somewhat better. Vance would be able to fight.
“What’s that smell?” Bennett asked, sniffing at the air. “It smells odd. Like deceit and lies.”
“Do not be mad,” Vance held a skewer of pork in one hand and a sausage in the other. He had to be on the right side of the shifter serum if he was eating so much.
“Don’t give me a reason to be,” Bennett shot back, crossing his arms.
“Corey and Stuart injected themselves.”
Bennett roared.
No, that was wrong. It was his mouth that moved, but it was his tiger who roared. “What? Why?”
Vance had the death wish of a madman because all he did was shrug. Shrug. Like he hadn’t just dropped a huge problem into their laps.
“I am so dead,” Dakota said beside him.
It was then Bennett noticed they were nude. When he tried to cover her with a blanket from the living room, she waved it off. “Shifters and nudity kind of go together. We don’t have our clothes half the time. You’ll get used to it. This ain’t nothing.”
Vance seemed more attracted to his meat anyway. Bennett was watching him very carefully. If his friend so much glanced at his mate, he would lose an eye.
“We figured it was a great idea. We’re our own geek army. We don’t need anyone’s help. We’re all badasses now.”
“I am going to kill you all!” Dakota shouted. “Do you have any idea how much trouble you’ve put us in? Gray is going to destroy Ben. And me? You’ll be lucky to find an ounce of my remains once Nick is done with me. How idiotic could you be? I thought you guys were supposed to be smart?”
“This is smart.”
“Yeah?” Dakota shot back. “Well, the bad guys are on their way. Right fucking now. How are we supposed to fight
