Because I Want To - Grace R. Duncan Page 0,63
fight Allie and Michael over who gets to keep him.” Adam laughed because both sets of parents had already—well, not argued, but certainly wanted Ethan with them. They’d ended up actually spending the evening together so all the grandparents could have time with him. His mom stood up and crossed the room, handing the baby back to him.
Adam took him and sighed. “I’ll talk to Matt.”
“What are we talking about?” Matt asked as he stepped through the front door.
“Oh, whether or not you’re getting my son pregnant,” Mom said, a little wickedly, then waved and left.
They were too used to her pointed comments by then for either of them to be easily embarrassed. Matt just looked confused, making Adam laugh. “What?” He crossed over to Adam and kissed him, then took Ethan and cuddled him before sitting next to Adam. “What was that?”
“Mom reminded me… my first heat’s coming up soon.”
“Oh, shit, it is.” Matt frowned. “But… why is this a big deal? I mean, obviously, we’ll get through it, but—”
Adam pointed at his chest. “I can’t breastfeed on the Sepel. So, no suppression. Or we have to switch Ethan to formula.” He made a face.
“Yeah, no. You went through enough to get to this point,” Matt said, sighing.
It had, in fact, been rough going for a little while. Adam had still been struggling with the whole boob thing right up until the first day in the hospital and so when Ethan had been born Adam had struggled with something of a block about feeding. Finally, the nurse in the hospital had convinced him to try, that she knew he’d want the best for his baby. It had taken a bit of work—he hadn’t paid enough attention to those chapters in the baby books—but eventually, he got the hang of it. Then he’d had nipple issues for a bit—they’d gotten really sore and hurt. Then Ethan had been voracious, and Adam had struggled to keep up. But finally, about a month ago, they’d gotten everything worked out, and now Ethan was nursing like a champ. Adam certainly didn’t have anything against formula, but if he could breastfeed, he wanted to, and after all that work, he didn’t want to risk fucking it up.
“So… what are the choices then?” Matt asked.
Adam considered it for a moment. “We only have a few. I could, maybe, pump and dump while I’m on the Sepel so I’d at least keep producing, but I don’t have enough of a supply of milk built up for Mom to feed him breastmilk exclusively while I’m on the suppressant. Which means—”
“Supplemental formula.”
“Yeah. Or, I put him straight on formula.”
Matt nodded, but looked no happier than Adam felt over that either. “Or…?”
Adam sighed. “Or, we let me go into heat as normal. Between, uh, sex sessions, I could call mom and feed him as much as I can or pump and get her to pick it up. Until then, I can try to build a small supply up. With any luck, he won’t need formula at all that way.”
“But then that means we get you pregnant again.”
“Yes.” Adam tilted his head. “We have talked about more and, we are in a decent place for it…”
They were, in fact in a very good situation. Adam’s parents had shocked the hell out of Adam and Matt the day after Ethan had been born. They’d sprung the news on Adam that his dad had gotten a promotion, along with a nice healthy bonus… which they’d used to pay off the house—and put a down payment on a much smaller one down the street. For themselves. Leaving the larger house to Adam and Matt.
Adam had thought he was going to spontaneously give birth to kittens right that second. Matt’s mouth had hung open so long, Adam’d had to close it for him. It’d taken a while—both Adam and Matt had argued quite a bit—but eventually, Mom and Dad had insisted it was something they had talked about for a long time, knowing the promotion had been coming. They could and wanted to do it. It was, they thought, the best way they could help start Adam and Matt’s life off.
As such, Matt and Adam really were in probably the best position to have their kids right away. They certainly still had bills, but their two jobs more than paid the utilities and food, insurances and the like. They’d even be able to save money since they didn’t have rent.
Matt grinned. “That’s certainly not
