Because I Want To - Grace R. Duncan Page 0,47
Are you still sick?”
“Yeah, but it’s not as bad as it was.”
Sara patted his shoulder again. “Don’t worry about it. You’ll be gaining before you want to.”
“Uh….” Adam blushed, making Sara and Matt both chuckle. He glared at Matt. “Shut it. Not a word from you.”
Matt held up his hands. “I didn’t say anything!”
“You laughed,” Adam said, scowling.
“Uh… I love you?”
Adam could hardly stay mad when Matt did that. He blew out a breath, then shook his head. “Asshole,” he muttered, then sat when Sara pointed at the chair. Matt just grinned at him while Adam waited for her to take his blood pressure and temperature, then handed him a cup.
“I gotta remember not to pee before we leave next time,” Adam grumbled. Still, he went to the bathroom and managed to force out enough to make Sara happy. Then he finally settled onto the table in the exam room. He’d never been happier in his life when she told him he didn’t have to take his clothes off.
Matt chuckled. “Do you hate being naked that much?”
“No. It’s just really fucking cold in here.”
Matt held his arms out. “I’ll keep you warm.”
Adam considered him. “Okay. Give me your sweatshirt.”
“That’s… not exactly what I was getting at.” Matt shook his head but pulled his sweatshirt off.
Adam took it and gave Matt a kiss on the cheek before tugging it over his own head, grateful they were pretty close to the same size.
“You know, you won’t fit in my clothes for—”
“If you don’t want to sleep on the couch, you’ll stop there.”
Matt had the grace to blush. “Uh, right. So, uhm—”
He was saved when the knock came to the door, and a moment later, the doctor stepped in. “Good morning Adam, Matt.”
Adam smiled. “Doctor Graham.”
“And how are you feeling?”
Adam couldn’t stop the face he made, making the doctor laugh. “Sorry. Everyone keeps asking me that.”
Dr. Graham chuckled. “And unfortunately they will for the next seven months or so.”
“Ugh, yay.” Adam wrinkled his nose.
“Err… that’s partially my fault,” Matt said, blushing.
Adam poked him. “I guess you’re allowed to ask.”
The color faded a bit from Matt’s cheeks. “Well, I did help get you this way.”
Adam shook his head. “So damned proud of yourself, aren’t you?”
Matt just grinned, and Adam couldn’t keep from smiling.
He turned back to the doctor. “Anyway! Well… the nausea is getting better.”
“I’m glad to hear it. The medication is helping, then.”
“Yeah.” Adam nodded. “Without it….”
“He’s still a mess,” Matt offered.
Adam attempted to glare, but failed, since it was too damned true. “Yeah. If I don’t take it, I’m back to saltines and water.”
“Make sure you don’t miss it, then. You and the baby both need real food.”
“I know. He helps make sure I do.” Adam pointed at Matt with his thumb. “And reminds me to eat when I’m not sick.”
Dr. Daniels nodded. “Any other problems?”
“Just tired, but I guess that’s normal.”
“Yes. You should get your energy back by the second trimester….” He paused to look at Adam’s chart. “Which starts in a few weeks.”
Adam nodded. He had the twelve-week date circled in bright red on the calendar. He also had an entry in his phone. And a countdown app.
There was no doubt, despite his fears with Matt, that he wanted the baby. Even if he ended up alone, he wanted that piece of Matt. And the first major hurdle was just under three weeks away. So much could still happen before then, and then everything they’d gone through would be for nothing.
He hadn’t noticed Matt move, but suddenly he was there, standing next to Adam, an arm around him. Adam looked at Matt, but the look on Matt’s face told Adam he’d figured out what Adam had been thinking about. In that moment, Adam was very happy about how well Matt knew him. He laid his head against Matt’s shoulder and forced his attention back to Dr. Graham.
“So far, everything is normal. Let’s check your abdomen. Then we’ll get your blood drawn for the first set of tests.”
Adam lay back on the exam table, and Matt took the chair right next to Adam’s head. Adam opened his pants and pushed them down when the doctor directed him to, then took Matt’s hand. Dr. Graham pressed lightly at different spots on Adam’s abdomen. The discomfort made him wince, and Matt squeezed his hand.
“Um… when do I start showing?” Adam asked, remembering one of the few questions he’d wanted to ask.
“First pregnancies usually take a while. Probably not until you’re closer to five
