seemed to be way too easy for them to forget who ran Sinners Bay. And if they starting disrespecting the Romeros again, we might have to get a bit creative in sending them a message or two written in body parts. We were all for different factions of criminals to thrive in our city, but they had to remember who their kings were. And if that took a bit of friendly bloodshed to keep them in line from time to time then so be it.
The door finally reopened and Rocco strolled in again. I barked a laugh and Enzo straight up started howling with amusement and he strode into the room shirtless but with a swathe of baby pink material wrapped all around him.
“What the fuck is that?” I demanded and Rocco offered up his most murderous look which looked utterly fucking ridiculous when coupled with all of that pink fabric crisscrossing his body.
“It’s a baby sling, stronzo,” he snapped, pointing at the lump in the centre of his chest just as a little murmur came from within it.
I was on my feet in seconds, grinning as I moved to peer in at my niece where she was nestled against his chest, her little eyes peering back at me as she snuggled close to her papa.
“I still have no fucking idea how an ugly stronzo like you created something so perfect,” I said, reaching out to snag a tiny hand with my finger. River took hold of it and squeezed, my smile widening as I looked at her.
“She clearly takes after her mamma,” Enzo said, his shoulder butting up against mine as he reached out to brush his fingertips over the soft, dark hair which coated her tiny head.
River just blinked at us, making one of those cute baby noises as she pressed her cheek to Rocco’s bare chest, looking so fucking happy it made me grin.
“Let’s hope so,” Rocco agreed. “But I’m supposed to be getting her asleep, so the two of you can back off now.”
“What’s the matter, will Sloan have your balls if you don’t stick to the sleep schedule?” Enzo teased.
“Where is Sloan anyway?” I asked.
“Trying to get some rest,” Rocco said. “And River wasn’t playing ball so I tagged in. Shall we get back to our discussion? What did I miss?”
“We were just discussing the possibility of sending the Devil Hearts a message,” I explained as I retrieved my finger and took my seat again.
“I think we should take someone important and chop him up into pieces then deliver them all back to them in gift boxes,” Enzo added with a dark smile as the others sat back down too.
Rocco clapped his hands over River’s ears and narrowed his eyes. “No murder talk in front of the bambina.”
“Don’t bring her to our weekly murder chats then,” Enzo replied, rolling his eyes.
“I’m good with the gift box plan,” I said, ignoring the way Rocco continued to shield River’s ears as if a three month old had any idea what we were saying. “It’s clear and to the point.”
“Fine,” Rocco agreed. “Just run the target by me before going ahead. I’ve got a couple of informants in their ranks and don’t want you butchering one by accident.”
“Okay,” Enzo agreed, his eyes lighting with the idea of carrying out that task. Sometimes I had to worry about him. I mean, sure, we were all technically murderers with a shit ton of blood on our hands, but that was just the profession we were in. But with Enzo, I got the impression he enjoyed it a little too much sometimes. Though he only ever killed nasty motherfuckers so I guessed it didn’t matter.
“So, back to Angelo,” I said. “I’m running out of leads to follow. Is there any chance Sloan came up with any new nuggets of info that might give me a fresh one?” I was hoping that as she was the only one in our family who had any history with him and actually knew him, she might have been able to come up with some angle I hadn’t thought of yet.
“Nothing,” Rocco said, his hands sliding from River’s ears and circling his palm against her back instead as we moved onto a safer topic of conversation.
“He clearly doesn’t want to be found,” Enzo huffed. “But he’s gotta come back eventually. Maybe we should just wait him out.”
“No,” Rocco snapped. “This famiglia has been broken for too long. It’s time he came home and joined his brothers
