Arrogant Heir (The Heirs #2) - Michelle Heard Page 0,7
chest, I suck in a deep breath of air.
What the fuck is going on with me?
It’s probably just a cold.
I will my heartbeat back to normal and shove all thoughts of Mila to the farthest corner of my mind. I’m sure I’ll be fine tomorrow. I just need a good night’s rest.
Chapter 4
MILA
Worried about Jase, I knock on his door.
“Yeah?”
Pushing the door open, I peek inside. “How are you feeling?”
His eyes snap from his laptop to me. “Better. Thanks.”
I take in his features, looking for any signs that he’s not feeling well. “You sure? You didn’t look too hot earlier.”
A grin spreads over his face. “Babe, I always look hot.”
I roll my eyes. “Yep, you’re definitely fine.”
I begin to pull the door shut, then Jase calls out, “Glad you’re finally admitting it.”
Shaking my head, I walk to my own room. I grab my pajamas, which basically consist of sweatpants and a t-shirt, and go shower.
When I’m done washing and drying off, I lather my body with my lily scented lotion. Searching for my panties, I let out a huff when I realize I didn’t bring any. I quickly wrap a towel around me and dart back into my room. Seeing Jase lying on my bed, I come to a sudden stop.
His eyebrows pop up, and his gaze sweeps over my body.
Gripping the towel tighter, I snap, “Dude, come on. What happened to personal space?”
He shakes his head and plasters an innocent look over his face. “I’m nowhere near your personal space.” Then he climbs off the bed and saunters closer to me. His eyes drop to the towel. “By the way, I love your PJ’s.”
“Ha-ha.” I go to my walk-in closet and grab a pair of cotton panties. Turning around, I come face to face with Jase, who followed me inside. Even though my heart skips a beat and there’s a flutter in my stomach, I force a scowl to my face. “Do you mind?”
His grin turns seductive as he slowly shakes his head. “Not at all.”
I know myself, and I’m reaching the point of no return at the speed of light. If Jase were to try anything, I wouldn’t be able to stop him, and I’d give in.
I can’t keep doing this with him, though. It hurts when he dangles the damn carrot in front of my face, and I know I can never have it.
The scowl on my face is replaced with a serious look as I say, “This has to stop, Jase.”
He tilts his head. “What?”
“This thing you’re doing,” I say, and when he takes a step closer to me, I begin to feel panicky. I can’t let him find out how I feel about him. I’d just die of embarrassment.
Jase comes to stand way too close to me, and I’m wrapped in a cloud of his woodsy scent.
I groan inwardly as my resolve slips some more.
Lifting a hand, Jase brushes my hair off my shoulder. He leans down, and when I feel his breath on my cheek, my eyes drift shut.
Oh, God. I have zero resistance right now.
“Thing?” he whispers so low, it almost sounds like a growl.
My stomach buzzes like a beehive that’s been disturbed, and my heart beats so fast I’m afraid my chest won’t be able to contain the wild organ.
Pulling back, Jase tilts his head, and he locks his eyes on mine. After a couple of torturous seconds, he says, “You know I’m only joking with you, right?”
Yeah, sadly, I do know.
I nod, trying very hard to ignore the sting in my heart.
There’s a weird look on his face as he smiles at me. “It’s just ’cause you’re one of my favorite people.”
Knowing he won’t take it wrong, I grab the chance to speak the truth without bearing the consequences of it. “Yeah, I love you, too.”
I love you so so so much.
I keep the smile on my face as I watch him leave, and then my shoulders slump.
Nothing sucks like unrequited love.
To Jase, it’s nothing more than innocent flirting, but for me, it’s torture.
Letting out a sigh, I walk back to the bathroom so I can get dressed.
You need to get over Jase, Mila. Nothing will ever come of it.
JASE
My heart is practically pounding in my chest as I shut my bedroom door behind me.
Fuck, why did I do that?
I was a split-second away from grabbing hold of Mila and kissing her.
Confused, I lean back against the door, sucking in deep breaths of air.
