they now possess eight of the sixteen immortal daggers, half the complete set.”

“How did they collect so many in such a short time?” asked one of the Guardians at the table.

Eva’s high platinum ponytail swished as she turned to face him. “The demons have found the way to the Interchange, a world where many of the daggers were hidden. They’ve taken control over most of the planet.”

“Legend has it that the master of the daggers will gain the power of the original Immortals,” added Starfire.

The Guardians exchanged hungry looks.

“Starfire has one of the daggers. But where are the other seven daggers not held by the demons?” one of them asked.

“The Sapphire Tear is in General Silverstar’s possession,” Eva said. “Silverstar is on the Interchange too.”

“He is going after the daggers.”

“No, I don’t think so,” she told the Guardian. “Silverstar and his team were tracking a dark angel who’s caused the Legion some trouble on Earth. When they found her, she fled. They followed her through a magic mirror to the Interchange. But little does Silverstar know, he is walking directly into a demon stronghold.”

Sanctuary

My father was walking into a demon stronghold. If only I could warn him. If only I weren’t stuck in this cursed Sanctuary. There had to be a way out of here, some trick I’d missed. But what?

“General Silverstar’s team is no match for a world full of demons,” Eva continued her report to the Guardians. “The demons will take the Sapphire Tear from him, and then they will be up to nine daggers. We need to stop them. And to do that, Starfire and I must get closer to the demons’ Interchange stronghold.”

“No. If you get too close to the demons, you might be captured. We cannot risk exposing our plan to the gods or the demons.”

“It’s the only way,” Eva told them. “Once the demons acquire all sixteen daggers, they will grow so powerful that it’s unlikely we can take the daggers from them. And without the immortal daggers, your plan to break your curse will surely fail.”

“Bolstered by the daggers’ magic, the demons will gain supreme dominance,” Starfire added. “And all the work you’ve put into balancing light and dark magic over the last several millennia will be ruined.”

“Very well,” said one of the Guardians. “You two will go to the Interchange and retrieve the daggers from the demons. Then you will bring them here, to us.”

Eva and Starfire nodded. They’d obviously passed the Guardians’ test. They were free to wander the Earth and any other world. And yet I was still trapped here, allowed out of the Sanctuary only sporadically—and only while being watched by Taron or Giselle. Even then, I’d had to wear a magic-inhibiting collar for my ‘protection’. It didn’t block all my magic, but my vigilant babysitter could turn off any or all of my powers with the press of a button.

Apparently, when your magic was being balanced, it was highly unstable, highly volatile. Well, except when inside the tranquil borders of the Sanctuary. Convenient, wasn’t it? I couldn’t believe anyone actually bought the Guardians’ wild stories.

Then again, many of the supernaturals living inside the Sanctuary had been hated or hunted their entire lives. Most of them had hidden their magic away out of fear. And then the Guardians had come along and given them an opportunity to not only use their magic, but also grow it stronger. I had to hand it to the Guardians. They sure knew how to manipulate people.

I’d played along with their game like a good little convert, but they obviously still didn’t trust me. Too bad they were so smart. Because, yes, I would definitely escape at the first opportunity.

“We will prepare the truck and leave at once,” Starfire said to the Guardians. He and Eva bowed their heads, then they walked out of the room.

From my limited experience with supervised visits, I knew that magic passages connected the Sanctuary to various places on Earth—and only Earth. As far as I knew, the passages didn’t go to any other worlds. So Eva and Starfire would first need to go to Earth, and then take a magic mirror to the Interchange.

Highly magical and nearly invisible, the mirrors were old. Very old. Older than gods and demons. Some people said they’d been constructed by the original Immortals to link together the worlds in their empire.

The Sanctuary’s magic passages were similar to the magic mirrors, except… Well, I wasn’t sure what it was. The passages just felt
