Alpha Siege (Omega Mates #1) - Pearl Tate Page 0,57

there’s no way I could move him.

All I can do is wait and see how long this lasts. Thankfully, about the time I decide I’m not going anywhere, I notice that Kaneer appears to be coming out of it. His body’s no longer stiff, but I’m not a doctor, and really… I’ve no idea. I feel so helpless.

My attention is riveted on Kaneer, blinking slowly and gathering his thoughts while I stroke his hair back from his forehead. I don’t even realize that the convict is recovering too until he speaks to me. “How do you feel?”

I don’t even look up. “I feel fine.”

I glance up and see that he’s lifting his shoulder to swipe his chin. “Yes, you’re just like Gail.”

“What do you mean?” For the first time, the convict smiles at me, and I realize that his teeth are perfectly straight and white, too.

“I’m Pup, by the way. Two days ago, when the last Siege occurred, Gail knew immediately what was going on when I fell to the ground. And her language, she called it a seizure?”

I nod, wondering how I missed it. But then, two days ago… I was pretty busy! Busy getting fucked, that is.

As I nod my agreement that I know and understand, Pup’s eyes flit around the encampment behind me. “Yes… well, Gail said that these things occur because of an electrical current misfiring in our brain. She’s very smart…”

His voice trails off as he discusses the woman that I never even had a chance to see. “Where’s she now?”

“I won’t tell you that. But I suspect, we’ll all be traveling together.” I think about how Kaneer mentioned he intends to take this man to some kind of underground checkpoint. He’s assured me that the guy has to have done something to deserve the bounty on his head and according to him it’s a big one. That’s why he was so intent upon finding him for his encampment.

Kaneer’s at my knees, pulling himself to sitting as he glances around the clearing. It looks like most of the others have stopped having their seizure, but very few of them are upright yet. His eyes land on me again, confusion clear on his face as he pulls me into his arms, brushing my hair back as he examines me.

Slapping his hands away when they start to creep up under my shirt, I scold him. “Stop that! What’s going on? What happened to you?”

Kaneer’s head swivels to look at Pup, who still has a strange smile on his face before he stares at me in surprise. “Does that mean you’re alright? You didn’t even experience the Siege at all?”

“No. I’m fine. But I’ve never heard of a group seizure before. What happened to you all?”

A much older man is pressing against one of the guards, and from the looks of it, they’re practically holding each other up as he yells, “This is it! This is it! The Omega Prophecy is beginning.”

A few things happen at once while I sit wondering what the hell they’re talking about. Pup immediately adds his agreement, yelling, “Yes! Exactly! And that’s why I’m above ground. Sunny here, and a female named Gail I met a few days ago, they’re two of the six Omega Mothers, descended from the heavens as prophesied in our Holy Scriptures!”

Kaneer climbs to his feet, tugging me up next to him as he stares at the wizened old man, using a staff as he moves in closer. He stops at the edge of the platform, staring at me with slightly parted lips. Behind him, Truna is practically crawling still, stumbling up toward us, mostly on her feet but using her hands too as she argues, “Are you sure? She really didn’t have any kind of Siege?”

“We should’ve suspected more with her small size and strange features. It’s just…” The old man rubs his forehead with his hand, leaning heavily on his staff as he lifts a foot up on the edge of the platform. “… I haven’t even examined her or been close enough to get a good look. My eyesight is not what it used to be, Omega Mother.”

My mouth drops open as he drops himself to his knees about three feet away, slowly lowering his staff to the ground in front of him and bending to place his forehead on the ground identical to the way they do when they pray. Truna is right behind him, her eyes burning with inquisitiveness and regret as she follows
