I feel like I’ve hung the moon for her.

“So, Karina’s okay?” she asks.

Wrapping my arms around her, I know we are going to be okay. Sure, there is still a lot of shit to figure out, but the bond we share is stronger than ever. Nothing will come between us. I’ll make sure of it.

“I’m not sure. You can call her, but you can’t see her yet. You need to gain control of yourself first. That might not be for quite some time, mi cielito.”

Her shoulders slump, and I realize she’s lost her only family. Guilt sits like a rock in my gut as I watch her grab my cell phone from the small table.

“Stay here,” I tell her. I blur through my house and outside to dispose of the head in the desert, and give her a few minutes of privacy.

The night air is crisp and cool compared to the heat that burned between us in my crypt. Once I’m several miles away, I bury the head. Then I return to Zoe’s side. I can’t be away from her for too long with her in her current fragile state of mind.

“And, you aren’t ripping Theo or Alex’s throat out?” I stop cold when I hear Zoe’s question. My heart skips a beat. Theo must have turned Karina. If he did, that would make everything better. Karina is Zoe’s family. Losing Karina would destroy a vital part of her. I step closer to hear the conversation.

“No. I’m completely fine. Lucius was just here, and he believes it’s one of Theo’s special powers.” I can hear Karina’s response as if she’s in the room.

I snap my fingers to get Zoe’s attention. “Let me speak to Theo.”

Zoe hands me the phone.

“This is Theo.”

“Hola, amigo. What is this about special powers?”

“Lucius says I’m a rare vampire called a True Blood. Apparently, I have the ability to take away the ravenous hunger of a newly turned vampire. At least, with one I’ve turned.”

“Are you willing to test your blood on Zoe?”

“I don’t see that it would do any harm. If she takes my blood and the hunger is still there, she’ll have to deal with it like every other new vampire.”

“But if it works, the girls can see each other.”

“Yes. And it might help stabilize our clan with the new members we’ve had join recently.”

Zoe claps her hands under her chin, like a kid on Christmas morning, obviously listening in on the entire conversation with her newfound vampiric abilities.

I smirk. “Are you able to stop by this evening?”

“We need to take Karina out to feed first, to be sure she’s truly in control. If all goes well, I’ll let you know.”

“Gracias, Theo. Adiós.” I end the call and set my phone on the nightstand before pulling Zoe back into my arms, where she belongs.

“I definitely fell down the rabbit hole. This is—”

I silence her words with a kiss. She melts against me, and my shaft hardens. “Let’s go shower before they arrive,” I say.

“I like the way you think.” Zoe’s arousal is like a drug, and I claim her mouth once more. There is plenty of time to lose myself in her before the others arrive. Who would have thought my life would bring me to this point?

I gave up hope of anything meaningful when my mortal life ended. Thankfully, a brave young woman walked into my immortal one and proved that belief wrong. Holding Zoe close, I pray Theo’s blood can help her. I saw the mask in her bedroom, and would love to take her to the masquerade at Toxic on All Hallows’ Eve.

I can’t stop myself from twirling in a circle. I’m laughing, and breathless despite the fact that I no longer need to breathe. Although, if I don’t inhale and exhale, I can’t talk. I tried, and ended up in a fits of giggles when all I did was mouth the words with no sound.

I haven’t quite gotten the hang of being a vampire, but I’m no longer on the verge of ripping everyone’s throat out, otherwise I wouldn’t be standing in this elaborate gown with this sexy mask on in the middle of a very busy Club Toxic.
