After I Fall (Immortal Billionaires #1) - Melissa Sercia Page 0,14
were going to say next. But not Ozi. He literally savored and noted every word I said. He was completely in tune to me and seemed to forget that Enzo was still standing there.
“I would like that,” I murmured. Oh dear god, he still had the tips of my fingers in his hand.
“All right, we kept you long enough, Raven. Max is making drinks faster than everyone can get them out. I swear, he’s too efficient for his own good sometimes.” Enzo chuckled and made a shooing motion with his hands.
I nodded and I swear I almost curtsied toward Ozi. What in the hell was wrong with me?
“It was nice to meet you, sir. I—”
“Please, call me Ozi,” he interjected.
I pulled my hand away under Enzo’s curious stare. “I better get back.”
“Of course. I will see you again.” Ozi didn’t break eye contact with me until I turned around. I could have held his gaze all night long.
I rushed back over to Max, my face flushed and my lower back pooling in sweat. “Sorry about that. Enzo wanted me to meet Ozi.”
Max arched an eyebrow at me. “Whatever you say, country girl. Now please get these drinks out of my sight. I can’t even look at them anymore. Who fucking drinks white zin anyways?” He looked like he was actually disgusted. I couldn’t help but giggle at him. And it was enough to snap me out of my stupor.
I didn’t run into Ozi again for the rest of the night, but I could still feel his gaze on me from across the terrace. I stole a peek every twenty minutes or so and I was right. He was watching me. It was probably just because I was the new girl and he wanted to make sure I didn’t screw up his party. At least that’s what I kept telling myself.
We finished cleaning up around two AM and I made it home by three. As exhausted as I was, I laid in bed wide awake. I couldn’t stop thinking about him. I will see you again. I couldn’t get the sound of his voice out of my head. This was not good. I came to New York to become a chef, not to have fantasies about my hot new boss. So how was I going to work for a man that made me want to rip his clothes off?
Cassius was seated in the living room. “What, no hot model waiting for you tonight? You must be losing your touch.”
I laughed as I poured us a couple whiskeys. Cassius knew me well. We had been partners for a long time, and friends even longer. I was still reeling from Raven’s presence that I hadn’t even bothered to notice that the party had cleared out before I could make my move on anyone.
“Watch your tongue,” I teased. “I already played twice today. Besides, we need to discuss whatever it is you’re concerned about.”
His smile faded. “It’s about our black account. I think someone is trying to hack into it. And with Lux out of the country on one of his little artifact expeditions, that leaves just you and me to figure it out.”
“I thought that account was unbreachable, Cassius. We can’t afford to have any of it leak out. You have to fix this. I can’t be seen anywhere near this. My presence is too public.” Our black account belonged to me, Cassius, and Lux, and it contained all our hidden assets and black-market dealings. It could also point out to what we were. Immortal.
Cassius paced around my living room, his wolf eyes glowing gold. “I know. I’m working on it. This is why you should never have turned yourself into a public playboy. You draw too much attention to yourself. Lux and I warned you about it decades ago.” While the three of us were well over a hundred years old, neither of us looked a day over thirty.
“Well, forgive me for not wanting to hide out in the wilderness like you. Or lock myself in an ivory tower as Lux has done. What’s the fun in being the strongest creature in the world if you can’t reap the carnal benefits?” I winked over my glass.
He huffed and slumped down onto my black leather couch. “And you, my friend, have too much fun. Anyhow, I’ve got my team on it. I’ll send word to Lux when he checks in. I just have a bad feeling about this.”
