He laughed. “You will,” he said. “You bet that sweet ass you will.”
I hoped like hell no one heard us in there. I raised my chin and walked out of the office. I didn’t see anyone looking at me, but my shame was enough. I hailed a cab and went back to my own office.
I sat down behind my desk and finally let out a breath. I could not believe I had just done that. What was I thinking? I couldn’t sleep with my boss. I definitely couldn’t sleep with the man that had broken my heart all those years ago. I needed therapy. Of all the choices I could have made, that was the worst one yet.
I decided I was going to pretend it didn’t happen. We’d never talk about it and it would just go away. I could go back to hating him and his tyranny.
Chapter 18
Nash
After that, I needed a drink. I needed a cigarette as well, but I didn’t smoke. A drink would have to do. I felt loose limbed after the little tryst. I sauntered toward the elevator and got a few strange looks. That was when I realized I was smiling.
I walked into the bar that was empty. Davin was sitting at a table near the bar. “Am I paying you to eat lunch now?”
“Woah,” he said when he looked up at me.
I sat down. “What?”
“You got a little something going on,” he said and reached up to his own head.
I reached up and smoothed down my hair. “Thanks.”
“Where’s the lady?” he asked.
“That was Saige.”
He threw his head back and laughed. “And now it is all clear.”
“What’s clear?”
He pointed to my hair and my neck. I reached up and put my hand over my neck. It was a minor scratch. I didn’t think it was obvious, but apparently, he saw it. “Yeah, that,” he said with a laugh. “You just got laid.”
“I’m not discussing this with you.”
He shook his head with a smile. “She’s pretty. I get why you’re so hot for her.”
“She’s gorgeous,” I replied.
“Yes, she is. So, what were you guys doing here?”
“She wanted to show me her old job,” I said.
“Why? Is she going back?”
“No,” I said and then thought about it. “I don’t think so anyway.”
“Why’d she want you to go there?” he asked.
“Because I’m an asshole and her old boss is great. I was supposed to learn a lesson. Her old boss is this sweet lady, and everyone loves her. She wants me to change my ways and get soft.”
“And that ended with sex in your office?” He laughed. “I assume it was in your office.”
“Yes, we went to my office. I didn’t take her there to do that. I wanted to show her how we worked here. She thinks I’m this horrible boss. I wanted to show her that my people work just as hard, and I don’t have to be all soft and bubbly. I don’t have to hug everyone. There is more than one way to run a business.”
“I think she’s trying to tell you to just be nice,” he said.
I smirked. “I think I just proved I can be very nice.”
He groaned. “Gross.”
“It isn’t gross. Did I mention we had a past?”
He nodded. “You did. I thought you were worried about that past making for some murky waters.”
“Apparently, it isn’t so murky. She tried to pretend like it never happened. It happened. Now that we’ve addressed the elephant in the room, I think things will be better.”
“You think a quickie in your office is going to make it easier to work together?” he asked with skepticism.
“Yes, I do,” I said. “There was a lot of tension between us. I think it was sexual tension. She will never admit it, but she wanted me.”
He groaned. “You think every woman wants you.”
“Most of them do,” I said with my usual cockiness.
“I think you might have just made your situation worse,” he warned.
“She came onto me,” I said.
“You are her boss. How are you going to tell her what to do and demand she do anything when you’ve seen her naked and vice versa?”
“Technically, neither of us was naked,” I told him.
“You know what I mean. You’re supposed to keep a certain distance between boss and subordinate. That’s a rule in life and it’s there for a reason.”
“Yes, but we were lovers before I was her boss,” I said.
“And now you just went back to the—I can’t even say it,” he muttered.
