Work Me Good - Ali Parker Page 0,119

“I guess this is goodnight,” he said. “Today was a good day and I don’t just mean the sex.”

“It was a good day. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

We took our time with the kiss goodnight. With very little effort, he stoked the fire burning low in my belly all over again. I pushed him away. “I’m never going to leave if you keep doing that.”

He grinned. “That was kind of the plan.”

I got in the car and watched him walk away. That had been wild. Not just the crazy sex but how good it felt to be together. The connection between us was growing stronger by the day. I felt our lives weaving together. It terrified me.

I could not get involved with Nash. It would never work. If we kept the relationship to the office only, I could tell myself it didn’t count. I could go home afterward and pretend it never happened.

My professional life was at the office. Nash was a perk. Next week, he’d be back at his headquarters and I would rarely see him. We wouldn’t be having these little rendezvous. My life would return to normal. I had to keep with the mindset this was nothing but a passing fancy. It would fade as quickly as it started.

Chapter 48

Nash

I felt like I was at a goodbye party. No one else but me knew it was the goodbye. As much as I had come to love working at the firm, I had to get back to my other business before everything crumbled to the ground. I signed off on some last forms before shutting down my computer. I was addressing everyone in the conference room in five minutes.

There was a knock on my door before it opened. Saige walked in with a smile on her face. She was wearing tailored black slacks that tapered and ended just above her pretty ankles. She had on a pair of black pumps and a simple white blouse. The outfit was basic but sexy as sin. I loved when she wore the pants that hugged her ass and showed off her perfect body.

“What’s up?” I asked. “I think there are too many people out there to do anything wild.”

She laughed. “Very funny. I wanted to see if you needed anything for the meeting.”

“Nope. I was just going to give a little rah-rah speech and call it a day. Is that wrong?”

“Nope,” she said with a shake of her head. “It’s perfect. The caterers will be here in about thirty minutes to start setting up. You’re a good boss for doing this.”

“I can be a good boss. I wanted to show them my appreciation. Some companies have Christmas parties. Accountants have end of tax season parties.”

She smiled again. “Yes, we do. I’m going to get everyone rounded up. I’ll meet you in there.”

I watched her walk away. I liked watching her walk away. If I could follow behind her all day and get away with it, I would do it. I grabbed my notebook and headed for the conference room. I didn’t feel the usual glares. People were actually looking at me without hate. I was going to call that a big win in my book.

“Hello, everyone,” I said in a loud voice to cut through the conversations. “Thank you all for giving me your time. I know everyone is anxious to get out of here. It’s a Friday and you all deserve a nice, long, relaxing weekend. With this tax season behind us, I’m looking forward to the next. I’ve got some ideas about how we can streamline things.”

I heard groans.

“Guys, give him a chance,” Saige intervened.

“I will be taking suggestions from each of you. I know you all know there are areas that can be improved. That’s what we are going to focus on.”

The sound of a vibrating phone interrupted my speech. At first, I thought it was me. I patted my jacket pocket only to find I didn’t bring my phone into the conference room.

“Sorry,” Saige muttered. “I have to take this.”

The look on her face told me something was wrong. She left the conference room with the phone pressed to her ear. I turned back to the people watching me and quickly finished up my speech. “We’ve catered an early dinner. Food will be here any minute. All of you please enjoy and feel free to take any extra home to your families. Again, thanks for all the hard work.”

I waved and headed out to find Saige. She was
