Wolf's Hunger (Mafia Monsters #5) - Atlas Rose Page 0,92
is volatile, at best,” my second answered. “Griffin will have them within the hour.”
“Good.” I flicked on the light to the office and stepped inside. There was silence on the other end of the phone, long enough to make me stand still.
“You found her?” Church asked carefully.
I couldn’t hide the edge in my voice. “I did.”
“Jesus, Phantom, how the hell are we going to get out of this?”
I didn’t know, didn’t know if we even could. We had Immortals on our side, but was it enough? If the mortals were ready to go to war with us, then this could be the perfect weapon, and there was no getting away from that.
“Does she at least understand what she’s done?” Church growled.
Our pack was injured, the wound as close to fatal as it could get. You forget one thing, female. You belong to me. There is no break where I’m concerned. No forgetting what we have. No goddamn walking away from us. My own words rose again now as I answered. “She does, and she hates herself for it. I underestimated the Unseelie power inside her. I won’t make that mistake again. She needs to be with us, where she doesn’t make knee-jerk decisions that put our entire life here in jeopardy.”
“You want me to find her?”
My stomach clenched. Had she suffered enough? “Bring her back to the Hunting Ground. We’ll stay here until the compound is secure, then we’ll all move together.”
“Will do,” he answered with a rush, and ended the call.
I wasn’t the only one who wanted the agent under our roof once more. I yanked out the chair and sat down, staring at the paperwork scattered across my desk. “How the hell am I going to fix this?”
I pulled out my cell and scrolled through the numbers until I found the only one I dared call. Kol was more than an up-and-coming Master Vampire, he now owned one of the largest Vampire covens in the country. Arcanium was more than a mecca for the bloodsuckers. It’s where the power resided. I pressed the icon, listening to the phone ring three times before it was answered.
“I don’t know you.” The remark was cold and biting. “If you know me, I have to ask why the hell you’re calling me in the middle of the damn day.”
“Because I know you’re with the Breeds, and if so, you’re in their underground compound this very moment and…I was hoping you’d answer.”
“Wolf,” the Vampire growled. “Who are you and what to you want?”
I told him my name and the predicament I found myself in. He listened, and muttered a subtle, “Fuck me,” before a, “Jesus, what the fuck was she thinking?”
“She wasn’t, it’s the damn Unseelie power riding her,” I explained.
“All this and you have a member of the Inner Circle after you?”
I leaned back in my seat. “I believe so.”
“Wolf, you got yourself in some pretty deep shit, and I take it you want to protect this…mortal?” The way he said it made me flinch. “Yes, I want to protect her. She fucked up, but I understand why she fucked up. She’s trying to protect us.”
“Good answer,” the Master Vampire responded. “Leave it with me, let me make some calls. Can I reach you at this number?”
“Yeah, night or day. You feel me?” The urgency was like adrenaline in my veins.
“I do, very much. I have my own mortal-turned-Vampire to contend with, as well. If there’s something I can do, then rest assured I will. Take care of that mortal, Wolf.” He chuckled before ending the call.
I didn’t think Elithien would answer my calls right now. He was too busy fortifying his house, and calling in an army to guard the one woman he’d die to protect. “Women,” I muttered as the faint thud of the side door reached my ears.
I looked at the clock. “That was fast, Church. I hope you went easy on her.”
Hate rolled through the hallway. Seething, rancid hate…and the stench of Alpha reached my nose. I was already turning, pushing back the chair as darkness filled the doorway to the office and a savage warning growl filled the room.
Silver eyes glinted as the massive midnight beast stalked across the threshold. I shoved up from the chair. The thick, massive coat made the beast look even bigger. I dragged in the scent of Finis…and froze. My pulse thundered as the beast curled its lips.
But this was no male…
This was female.
Black coat, piercing yellow eyes shining under the silver as the beast strode closer. She moved slowly, awkwardly. My gaze tracked to the heavy swell as the past reared inside my head.
Screams descended. Screams from my past.
Screams that belonged to the only Wolf who had yellow eyes like our mother.
“Marian?” I whispered, calling my sister’s name.
Before the beast that smelled like the powerful Inner Circle Wolf bared her fangs, and eased her weight onto her haunches. And with one unhinged, unmerciful snarl…she leaped.
