The Tracker's Rage (Mate Tracker #3) - Ingrid Seymour Page 0,16

was also my teacher, and I was going to need him for a few more days.

Eric leaned casually against the wall. “Lesson over,” he said.

Huh?

“Don’t be so dense, Sunder. I just showed you how you can use your alpha abilities to avoid a fight. You’re welcome.”

Chapter 7

Three breakfast burritos later, I arrived at the office with Rosalina. I was still staying in her place since I hadn’t had a chance to move all my stuff to my condo. But, today after work, the plan was to pack it all up in the Camaro to begin settling in tonight.

I was excited, and it seemed to be the only thing able to put a smile on my face. The thought of anything else triggered my anger, including my next task, which seemed to be hanging over my head like a sharp guillotine.

Off with her head. That was what Aaron Blackridge would say when he found out his mate was dying due to rhabo. He would be here at 10 AM to talk, and I was dreading it. I was about to walk into my office when Rosalina made a face.

“Uh-oh,” she said from the chair at her desk. She was looking through the window at something outside. I followed her gaze.

Jake was headed this way from across the street.

A smile stretched my lips as I geared up for the big reveal. “Watch this.”

Rosalina jumped to her feet, looking scared. “Watch what? What do you mean?”

“I didn’t put on Damien’s poop perfume this morning.”

“Oh, shit!”

The door chimed as Jake walked in. He was in shirtsleeves, jeans, boots, and a leather bracelet I’d never seen on him before. Immediately, his silver eyes opened wide, and his nose twitched, scenting the air. He turned his attention to Rosalina, nostrils flaring. When he realized the smell wasn’t coming from her, his attention slowly switched to me.

My smile grew and also the feeling of satisfaction at seeing him so confused.

But his puzzlement quickly morphed into anger, and he marched in my direction like an angry bull ready to bump me into next week. At the sight of his rage, a sudden jolt of fear plunged down my spine, and I took a step back, for a second regretting my decision to reveal myself this way. He grabbed me by the shoulders, squeezing hard.

“Who did you sleep with?!” he demanded.

Huh? That threw me for a loop. Not what I was expecting. He thought my new wolfish scent came from someone I’d slept with? That was actually a thing? Suddenly, I was thinking back to all the times I’d seen him since he’d returned and realized that every single time he’d smelled of himself—just pine and rain. My heart did a little jig.

“Um, I think I hear a latte calling my name from across the street.” Rosalina squeezed around the desk and quickly vacated the office, leaving me alone with a very upset werewolf.

“Answer me?!” he said, a note of desperation in his voice.

“Get your hands off me, Jakie.” The nickname that Allison had called him seemed to piss him off even more. His mouth twisted in a sneer.

I tried to get free from his grip, but he wouldn’t let me go. Instead, he pushed me against the wall and bore down on me, his face sharpening to wild angles, pupils enlarging, fangs glinting in his mouth.

“I owe you no explanation,” I spat, my anger swelling to match his.

He shook his head, breathing hard, some internal battle raging inside him as if he wanted to stop his crazy behavior but couldn’t. His wild side seemed to win, and he growled another command.

“Tell me, so I can kill him.”

“I can sleep with whomever I want. I could even get engaged, and it would be none of your business, you two-faced bastard.” I pushed against his hard chest, but moving a building would’ve been easier.

“I haven’t slept with anybody else.” His voice trembled with ill-contained fury. “Not since the last time I was with you.”

The revelation washed over me like a bucket of cold water, leaving me with my jaw hanging open. Jake stepped away from me and raked his clawed fingers into his hair. He looked at a loss for a moment, then regret entered his gaze, probably wishing that, in his anger, he hadn’t just dropped this bomb.

Seeing his vulnerability, my eyes opened to the truth. He couldn’t control himself any more than I could. This dumb attraction was mutual, all the way to the inability to find any
