Tap Out (Reaper's Den Book One) - Nikki Mays Page 0,62

ask for his number. I don’t want him to think that I am one of those women who will call him constantly.”

“Kea, I can guarantee that even if you did ask for his number, he would never think that.” I say and then mutter. “Trust me, he would have no issue with you having his number.”

“Huh?”

“Oh, nothing. Just that you probably should get his number so that something like this doesn’t happen again. You look like death girl.”

She sniffs. “Says the Grim Reaper.”

I give her a nasty look. “Listen up hooker. I’ve at least had enough caffeine to sort of function. You don’t want to start shit that your brain isn’t going to be able to handle right now.”

She’s about to reply when the terrible trio decide to join us. They’re actually all adorable looking in their matching outfits. All black capri workout leggings and different colored tank tops. If you didn’t know any better you really might think that they’re actually triplets.

“What’s up evil step-monster? Still grumpy that Dad dragged your butt here?” Becca asks with a smile that’s just too wide. Little shit.

Kealy looks over at them and then back to me. “Evil step-monster?” She looks at us in pure confusion. “You and Danny didn’t get married, right?”

“Not yet.” Missy pipes up. “But we’re working on it.”

“For real. You both are old, shouldn’t you be doing this sooner than later?” Paige asks with a shit eating grin on her face.

“I’m eight years younger than Danny.” I growl inhumanly. “If anything, I could be your older,” I look all three of them up and down, “much hotter older sister.”

I jump when all the guys around us start laughing. Oops, I forgot that they’re all nosey asses and eavesdrop on everyone’s conversations. They’re worse than little old ladies, I swear.

“You totally just solidified your place as an evil step-monster. You shall forever be known as ESM.” Missy grumbles.

I can’t help but smile at the glares that I’m receiving. “Shouldn’t you three be off trying to find some poor suckers to serve as groomsmen in my fictitious wedding?”

“I’m so confused.” Kealy utters helplessly.

“You get used to it around here.” Becca states with a little shrug.

“It’s not fictitious if it’s going to happen someday.” Paige looks between me and Danny with her lips pursed. “Even if we have to drug you and papa number two and take you to Vegas.”

My mouth drops open as I hear Danny chuckle. I give him a dirty look. “What is with you and your family threatening to drug me or get me drunk and take me to Vegas?”

Missy nods her head. “Good to know that Dad is on the same page. Makes things a lot easier, for sure.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose and wonder how this is actually my life. How am I in love with this man and his three evil spawn? What sane person would actually choose this? I should probably go for a psych evaluation at some point. Because it can’t be normal to find this funny instead of truly alarming.

“I thought you said that they didn’t like you and wouldn’t want you dating Danny?” Kealy whispers to me, but those three have some creepy Vulcan hearing. Their eyes go wide and their mouths drop open.

“Is that why you and Dad hid your relationship originally? Because you thought that we wouldn’t like you?” Becca asks in a serious tone that I’ve never heard her use before. Smart ass one? Yes. Serious? Never.

I bite my bottom lip and look around at the three girls. “Erm…maybe?”

“Why the hell would you think that?” Missy questions and rolls her eyes when a bunch of people around us snort. I make sure to raise and eyebrow for good measure. “Okay, okay, I’ll admit, we’re particular when it comes to Dad. But you hadn’t even really met us. What would make you think that we wouldn’t like you?”

I fiddle with my nails. I guess it’s time to come clean about eavesdropping on them. “A while back, before your dad and I even started dating, I overheard you girls talking about how you hate the women that he dates and how no one is good enough for him.”

“Wait!” Danny walks over. “That’s why you were worried about them finding out?”

I shrug sheepishly. In hindsight, it sounds dumb, but no one woman wants the children of the man that she’s dating to hate her.

“Oh my God!” Becca screeches. “We weren’t talking about someone like you.” Missy and Paige nod
