Sins of Mine - Mary E. Twomey Page 0,71

no doubt be heard several floors down. “Sloan!”

Both the guys wince at my volume.

I glance toward the doorway, realizing that he never left. Sloan jogs to my side, a relaxed smile on his face and not a hint of surprise. “Well, would you look at that. Well done, guys.” He kisses my temple. “I guess you were right, bunny. Doesn’t need to be a big production. Just the question is enough.”

I shove him lightly. “You knew?”

He scoffs. “That you think there’s a thing that goes on in this massive place that I don’t know about is an insult to my precious ego. Of course I knew.”

Paxton stands, his winded grin beaming. “We asked him for your hand.”

Gray rights himself, shoving his hands into his pockets. “He helped us pick out the ring.”

I shake my head, unable to stop staring at the showstopper as Sloan kisses my cheek. “It’s perfect.” I cuddle into Sloan and show him how incredible it looks on my finger. “I guess I don’t have to wait for the world to let me be who I am. I make that choice, with or without their approval.”

Sloan holds me close, even though I can tell the guys want to celebrate with a grand kiss.

The first man to ever hold me in his heart cradles me with a hug, and I pray it never leaves my soul. “Take the future you deserve,” Sloan whispers. “You deserve happiness. If the world won’t give it to you, then you have to steal it and run.”

Sloan releases me so I can kiss Gray and then Paxton. But I draw strength knowing that Sloan will keep me close, so I don’t fall from this new, unscaled height without him near.

Everly Ann nips at Gray’s heels. I like to think she loves me the most, but Gray has a way with her that makes me seem like old biscuits.

Gray scoops her up, but kisses me a second time, sealing our commitment to each other without apology. “Now you can always hold onto me, even when the world goes dark.”

I love this man. It’s not just his strength, it’s his warmth that cocoons me. His steadiness melts the icy exterior I always thought was so crucial to my survival.

Paxton holds my cheek with one hand as I indulge in closeness with the man who was always out of reach. “You set me free,” he whispers. “I vow to make sure I do the same for you.”

There’s a long road ahead of us, to be sure, but one thing is certain: we will write our own rules, and live out our happy endings on our own terms.

Note from the Author:

There are a lot of issues to think about in this series, because it is based on inequalities that are happening right now in our current justice system. If you would like to learn more, I suggest looking into mass incarceration, the loophole in the Thirteenth Amendment, and the various companies who profit off the inhumane wages they pay prisoners.

Going for a Run

Destino

How a peace walk turned into running for my life, I’ll never understand. This was a bad idea.

Even though I can see just fine through the night, the rain pelting my face makes the jutting rocks harder to detect. I’ve tripped three times already, and I just know it’ll be an even four if I’m not careful. But there’s not a spare second to invest in caution. The growl and snap of jaws close behind me light up a fear I know I’ll never be able to outrun.

I don’t know how Alex talked me into this, but if he ever suggests another hairbrained scheme, I’m saying no. I’m saying no so loudly that he actually hears me this time.

The smattering of trees thickens as I near the tall border wall. The stone barrier I’m bolting
