asked.

“Open it and find out,” Smoke replied.

Tre took the box and was shocked at the density of it. The weight didn’t match his understanding of anything that size. His interest was piqued. For a moment, as Smoke had known would be the case, the man’s mind was taken away from the cash, and focused solely on the package. Upon opening it, then unwrapping the protective felt around it, a brilliant color of gold rested in his hands. Tre stared at it in awe. He’d seen a lot of gold in his life — chains, gold rings, even gold teeth once in a while, but he’d never seen a bar of gold.

“What in the hell, Smoke?” said Tre in awe.

“Turn it over,” Smoke said.

Doing as told, Tre was shocked into silence when he saw his name engraved in the bar as well as the current date. No words were spoken for several seconds as Tre shook his head in disbelief.

“To mark the start of a new journey, I thought it would be appropriate to show you my appreciation for the opportunity of our new business venture,” Smoke said as he put one of his huge hands over the shoulder of the drug lord.

“Holy hell, Smoke. This is unreal. Thank you,” Tre said, truly in awe of the gift. This was exactly where Smoke, Eyes, and Sleep needed the man to be — complacent. Tre turned and gave Smoke a huge bear hug.

“Okay . . . okay . . .” Smoke said, and they both laughed as Smoke pushed him back.

The cartel boss walked over to his desk, fell into his chair, and lifted the gold bar high in the air, twisting it in different directions, smiling as the reflection shifted past his face.

“This is some real OG shit right here, Smoke. Hell, ain’t no one give me nothin’ like this before. Bet yo ass I’m keeping this locked up tight. No one touchin’ this but me,” Tre said

“Now, are we gonna agree to be partners? Or are you going to keep making me wait like my ex did when she pissed on that stick to see if she was pregnant?” Smoke asked as he leaned against the table as if he didn’t have a care in the world.

“Bitches be trippin’ for sure,” Tre mused. “The answer is, yes. Let’s get you set up, Smoke. Your money will bring in some serious stakes. My distributors are going to love this. We don’t move much H right now but that’ll change. We’ll definitely make some dragon-rock and screwball party favors for them to get everyone excited about sharing the new product,” Tre said, his voice and attitude back in business mode.

Three consecutive blasts from the base of the building shook the room the four men were standing in. The lights flickered until the power couldn’t sustain its source and went dark for good. It was just before sunset so everyone could see each other, but some details of the room were lost in shadows.

“What the fuck was that?” Tre shouted, jumping up from his chair, a pistol in his hand. The special ops team were slightly surprised he’d been able to pull a weapon so fast. Thankfully, he wasn’t pointing it at any of the men, just looking for outside danger.

The sound of bullet rounds started hammering the outside of the building. They were loud, constant, and from more than one weapon. It didn’t sound like this was going to be over quickly.

“What do we do? Where do we go?” Smoke screamed, making sure his voice sounded panicked.

Tre ran to the window and saw three cars sitting in the middle of the street, multiple weapons firing bullets from inside the vehicles into the building. “Someone put a hit out for me; there’s no way I’m going to act like a little bitch and go down hiding.” Tre ran back to his desk, opened a drawer, and pulled out an AK-47 that had a round magazine attached to it. He was oddly calm as he walked over to the window, then shot it out. Glass shards fell to the street below as Tre aimed his rifle at the cars below and pulled his trigger.

The big bouncer who’d greeted them came running in with his gun drawn. Finding his boss wasn’t under direct attack from the inside, he then ran to the window and started firing at the cars alongside Tre.

Another explosion rocked the building, but this one came from the other side.

“Moose, get the
