Say You'll Stay - Sarah J. Brooks Page 0,77

teacher caught us? I say it was Mr. Harrup, these dopes say it was Mr. Weston.”

I leaned back on my hands, stretching out my legs, trying to be inconspicuous as I pressed against Adam’s. I was like a cat in heat. I couldn’t stop thinking about sex. And Adam naked. It’s only because I hadn’t slept with anyone for so long. A prolonged drought would make anyone perpetually turned on. It had nothing to do with Adam specifically.

You keep telling yourself that, sweetie.

“Mr. Weston. Definitely. I remember the mole on his chin.”

“Told ya!” Skylar cheered, giving Adam a high five.

Kyle rolled his eyes. “I’m not listening to any of you. You three ran into the woods while I was being chased like a crazy person. So whatever.” He hiccupped. “Okay, I think I need to give the beer a rest. I just threw up in my mouth.” He made a face and swallowed.

“Gross.” Skylar gagged.

I was feeling warm and happy. I couldn’t remember the last time I felt that way. And it had everything to do with the three people besides me, just like we had always done for years. Maybe it was possible to let go of all that hurt. Well, at least for one night anyway.

“So, how’s your sister doing?” Kyle asked on the tail of another hiccup.

I looked at him in disappointment. I had really hoped he’d outgrow his unreciprocated feelings for Whitney Galloway.“Annoying as always,” I reported blandly.

“What’s with the hostility? You and Whit were always close,” Adam asked curiously. I had almost forgotten he hadn’t been privy to the last ten years of my life and thus had no idea that my sister and I were a long way from the besties we used to be.

Skylar and I shared a look. She was very aware of how much Whitney had changed. She had seen firsthand how selfish and self-absorbed she had become.

“Let’s just say successful Whitney equals bitchy Whitney. We fell out a long time ago and never really recovered. End of story.” I didn’t want to talk about Whitney. Not when I was feeling so nice and fuzzy.

“I can’t believe that. Whitney isn’t like that,” Kyle defended.

“Well, you can see for yourself because she’s moving back to Southport at the end of the month,” I announced. Skylar’s eyes widened, and Kyle’s mouth fell open.

Whitney’s moving back? Since when? I thought she was living the high life in France,” Skylar exclaimed.

I lifted my hands. “She’s decided to play dutiful daughter and come home. I’m sure there’s something in it for her. Whit doesn’t do things out of the goodness of her heart. Not anymore.”

Kyle’s face had flushed red. “Whitney’s moving back?” he asked, his words slurring slightly, his eyes unfocused.

“She sure is.”

Adam turned to him and pointed. “Didn’t you go see her that one time? Right after she moved to LA?”

“You went out to see Whitney? Why is this the first time I’m hearing about this?” I asked.

“He was out there for almost a week. And then he came back and wouldn’t talk about it. Isn’t that right, buddy?” Adam nudged Kyle with his foot who was definitely looking a little green around the gills.

Kyle stumbled to his feet. “I think I’m going to puke.” He hurried into the house.

“That’s pretty much how I feel about it,” I muttered. “He really went out to LA to see Whitney?” I asked Adam.

He nodded. “Yeah, I remember thinking it was really weird. He came back tight-lipped about the whole thing, and he got together with Josie not long after that, so I never bothered to bring it up again.”

Guys were ridiculous. Women would pester until we got the truth. Men simply shrugged and drank a beer together.

“Huh,” was all I said.

“On that note, I’m calling an Uber.” Skylar pulled out her phone and got to her feet. “I’ll see you later, Adam.” She looked at me. “Call me tomorrow?”

I nodded.

She then pointed a finger at me, then to Adam. “You two play nice.”

I met Adam’s eyes, and he smirked. “We will, Sky. Promise.” I kicked his leg. He was far too obvious. Thankfully, Skylar was too drunk to notice.

“Okay, well, tell Webber I’ve left. Though I think the toilet will have his undivided attention for some time.” With that, she left through the garden gate.

Then we were alone.

Adam slid over to sit beside me. “God, that was excruciating.” He leaned in, his nose nuzzling the side of my neck. “I’ve been wanting to touch you all night.”

He
