when he was a boy, a time he had buried from when his father had been killed in a car accident.

“No, you need to stay here with Talena and try to get ahold of Gary. Tell him to meet me at the hospital.” He cradled his mother’s face between his palms, trying to infuse her with his strength. “She’s going to be fine.” He rattled off the hospital the officer had told him they were airlifting Angela to, waving at Talena as he made his way back the way he’d come. Normally he’d have made sure to spend time with his little sister before leaving, and he could see the hurt on her youthful face as he left without doing so this time. After he made sure Angela was okay, he’d come back.

How he wished his words and prayers would’ve been the truth hours later as he sat in a plastic chair looking down at his loafers, his cellphone gripped in his hand while he waited for someone to come and speak to him. He’d prayed and hoped, which he should’ve known better than to do.

“Mr. Haven?”

He hurried to his feet, moving swiftly toward the doctor, already knowing what he was going to say by the set to the man’s shoulders. Scott had been in situations where death occurred. The man in the clean scrubs had clearly taken the time to make himself presentable before coming out to break the news to him. Fuck.

“I’m Scott Haven, Angela’s brother.” Obviously, there wasn’t anyone else in the surgery waiting area but him.

“I’m Dr. Obrien. I was part of the trauma team that tried to save your sister. I’m sorry, but she and the baby didn’t make it. Your sister didn’t have her seatbelt on when she went over the cliff. Even if she had, at the high rate of speed she was traveling, I don’t think anyone would’ve survived. The fact she was driving a convertible and went over the rocky edge—it was a miracle she was alive when she made it here. I’m truly sorry for your loss.”

Scott could see the man meant what he said. He listened to him say he was sorry again and then go on to explain how hard he’d tried to save her. Which didn’t mean shit to him because she was still gone, but he knew the man needed to say the words, so he let him. Angela loved to drive fast, especially with the top down. What she didn’t do was drive or ride without buckling up. “Are you sure she didn’t have her seatbelt on?” he asked for verification.

Dr. Obrien rubbed the back of his neck before answering. “In a crash like this, if she’d have been wearing a seatbelt, there would’ve been bruising along her torso from the belt, even if she’d have been ejected. Your sister’s body”—he took a deep breath—"May I be frank with you?” He’d been making motions across his chest as he was speaking and then dropped his hands.

Scott nodded, taking a moment to steady his thoughts, waiting for whatever shit was going to fall out of the man’s mouth.

“Ms. Dupont had more broken bones than any trauma patient I’ve ever encountered. To be honest, she had very few bones that weren’t fractured when they brought her in. She also sustained significant damage to both lungs, ruptured her spleen, and her intestines were compromised due to her pelvis being fractured. I can only say her saving grace was the head trauma that knocked her unconscious. What I mean, is that she was completely unresponsive. The injuries, Mr. Haven, would’ve been excruciating for anyone, but a woman—I wouldn’t want anyone, especially a young woman to suffer like that. The head injury would’ve occurred immediately upon impact. My diagnosis would be that she wasn’t cognizant when she went over, nor when she sustained the rest of the damage. I hope that gives you and her family some measure of relief.”

“Thank you, doctor. How...how about the baby?” Shit, did they deliver her child?

“There was no chance for the baby to survive. My guess, from the size of the fetus, she was probably around twelve weeks. Even with the best medical intervention, that’s too early for a baby to be born.”

The doctor went on to explain the size of a twelve-week baby, comparing them to a plumb and some more technical shit he let go in one ear and out the other. His heart was breaking for Angela and her child and
