your statement, son,” the officer said.

“I figured you would. But you’re going to want to handcuff me first,” Mark answered, holding his hands out.

“Why is that?” the officer asked, reaching for the cuffs he kept on his belt.

“Because I was part of the breaking and entering. You’re going to need to arrest me and read me my rights.”

The officer snapped the cuffs on Mark’s outstretched hands and looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “Sounds like you’re anxious to be locked up.”

“I am, sir.”

“Never seen anybody happy to be arrested,” the officer remarked as he came around the desk to escort Mark to an interrogation room.

“I decided there’s some things worse than taking responsibility, sir. There’s even some things worse than death,” Mark said, as his eyes reddened, and he blinked furiously to try to stop the silent tears.

Five minutes after the officer escorted Mark to the interrogation room, another young man walked into the same precinct. He waited at the front desk for a few minutes before finally calling out. “Hey! Anybody here?”

“Yeah! Hold your horses, I’ll be there in a minute,” one of the officers responded.

When the officer finally walked over to the front desk, he looked at the young man standing there. He had similar injuries to the guy that had just gone into interrogation with the Sergeant. “Can I help you?” he asked suspiciously.

“Yeah, I been breaking into houses, and I saw a guy kill somebody that a woman is in jail for killing. She didn’t do it,” Brett said.

“What the hell is going on? We just had another guy come in here and say the same damn thing,” the officer said as he walked around the desk to take Brett into custody.

“Telling the truth. Been riding on me and I need to tell somebody,” Brett said.

“Is that so?” the officer asked.

“Yes, it is.”

“Seems like ya’ll both a little out of sorts this morning,” the officer said as he handcuffed Brett.

“Yeah, well, having the shit scared out of you will do that to you,” Brett remarked.

“Care to elaborate?” the officer asked.

“No, sir, I do not. Just take my statement and tell me who all I have to explain what I saw to.”

Chapter 15

“Baby! Come on! You won’t have time to eat!” Roman called out.

“I’m almost done. I’m putting on my boots!” Darcie answered.

A couple of minutes later she came running into the living room with her cowgirl boots on, her jeans tucked into them, and her backpack over her shoulder. “I’m ready!”

“Let’s go,” Roman said, opening the door and holding it open as she walked through it. He locked the door and followed her to their SUV. Once they were strapped in, they drove across the road to Riley’s house, where Maia was waiting breakfast on them.

Roman pulled up behind Riley’s truck, leaving Maia’s truck unblocked so she could leave when she was ready. Together he and Darcie walked up the steps and across the porch. He tapped on the front door and opened it before sticking his head in and calling out. “Ya’ll decent?” he asked, with a grin, knowing they were up and about starting their day.

“Naw! Never! But come on in anyway,” Riley answered from the kitchen.

Roman chuckled and stood back while Darcie preceded him into the house.

Darcie looked up at him as she went by. “Ooooo,” she said, her eyes wide, “it smells like bacon!”

“Yes, it does!” Roman said.

“That would be because I fried about two pounds of it,” Maia said from the kitchen as she heard them walking toward her.

“That’s a lot of bacon,” Roman said as he stepped into view with Darcie right in front of him.

“Usually it’s not enough, but with Lucas and Lazarus out and about, and Richie and Yvette sticking close to home, I have way too much with everything else I made,” Maia said. Then she turned her attention to Darcie. “Sit wherever you want, baby. You want your eggs fried or scrambled?”

“Scrambled, please,” Darcie said.

“Give me just a second,” Maia said.

“Unnnhhhh!” Sebastian shouted at the top of his lungs.

“What? What do you want?” Riley asked.

Sebastian lifted both his little hands up, presented them to his Doddy and started babbling.

Riley grinned at his son. “You trying to tell me you need more food?”

“Most likely. I have never seen a baby eat like he does!” Maia said.

“He’s a growing boy, needs his protein,” Roman said, reaching over and handing him a slice of bacon as he took a seat beside Darcie.

“You making him another egg?” Riley asked.

“Yes.
