and eight down each side of the band. The matching wedding band has twenty, two point round stones set in it as well, making a total of 1.93 carats, and the matching groom’s band is platinum as well. If you’d like to have some stones set in it, we can do that for you in just a couple of days.”
“No, thank you. I like it plain,” Roman said.
“Do you know what her ring size is?” the girl asked.
Roman looked at the girl, then Riley. He shrugged. “Small?” he asked.
“Well, you could always bring her back in for a fitting,” the girl said
Roman shook his head. “I don’t think we’ll be in town long enough for that.”
The girl held out her hand for Roman to see. “Are her fingers long, or short? Are they about my size or more slender, or a little thicker?” she asked.
Roman leaned over looking at the girl’s hand. “Could I hold your hand?” he asked. “To see how your fingers feel between mine?”
“Sure,” she said, holding her hand out.
Roman walked around behind the counter and stood behind the girl, laying his hand on top of hers and linking the fingers of both their left hands that way.
He could feel her nervousness. “I just held her hand a little while ago so I’m checking from the same positions,” he explained.
“Okay,” she answered, still a little wary.
Roman let her hand go and stood beside her, then linked his right hand with her left while he squeezed her fingers between his. “Hers are a little thinner, just a little bit though,” he said.
“Okay. I wear a 6 1/4. Let’s see what this is,” the clerk said as Roman nodded and walked back around the counter to stand with Riley.
The clerk slipped the ring Roman had chosen over a metal rod that narrowed at one end. When Roman looked closer he realized there were markings down the length of it. “Perfect!” she exclaimed. “This one’s a six. If her hands are just a touch more slender than mine, this should do it, or at least be very close. You may have to have it sized wherever you're headed, but it’ll fit well enough to wear until then. Just have her be careful with it.”
“Okay,” Roman said with a grin.
“Now, let’s take care of yours. Let’s see if this fits,” she said, taking the groom’s wedding band out of the box and handing it to him.
Roman tried to put it on, but it only went halfway down his finger.
“Let me get the size guides and see what size you need,” the girl said, walking down to the end of the counter and coming back with a large metal hook with dozens of different sized little bands hanging from it. She started at the large end of the bands and slipped them on Roman’s finger until she found the right fit. “There we go. I’m sure we probably have one that’ll fit you. Give me a minute and I’ll check.”
“I want the one that matches this ring,” Roman said, indicating the wedding set he’d picked out for Talie.
“We make them all in house. We just picked a plain groom’s band to put with it on display,” the girl explained.
“Oh, okay. So, it’ll look just like this one?” Roman asked.
“Yes. We usually don’t specially design the groom’s rings to match the way we do the engagement and wedding bands for the bride. Occasionally we will if we’re asked to, but most men just want a plain gold or platinum band.”
“I understand,” Roman said, and looked at Talie’s ring again with a grin on his face while he waited for the girl to come back.
“That’s a gorgeous ring, Roman,” Riley said, smiling at the happiness his friend just couldn’t hide.
“It is, isn’t it?” Roman asked. “I hope she likes it.”
“I’m sure she will. You going to ask her what size ring she wears when you see her tomorrow?” Riley asked.
“Yeah. And I’m going to show her and make sure she likes it.”
“If you can talk to her,” Riley said. “Don’t forget this is a hearing, not like in the attorney’s office. They may not give you time to interact with her.”
“You’re right. I know that. I’m just hoping.”
“Found it!” the girl said, coming back into the showroom. “Here you go, try this,” she said, handing it to Roman.
Roman took the simple platinum band from her and slipped it on his finger. He smiled when he looked down at it then shook his hand loosely
