“Just one in there?” I ask because it’s like I went to bed one day with a slightly swollen stomach and woke up the next day like I’d swallowed a basketball in my sleep.
“Just one,” she confirms.
We watch the screen as pictures are taken of arms and legs, and the heartbeat is measured and determined to be healthy. She declares the baby to be measuring right in line with my due date. I’m sure they wait until the very end to build suspense, a way to have the power in the room, but when she speaks next, it isn’t to tell us the gender.
“My uncle is gay.”
“Okay,” Rocker says. “That’s cool.”
Jinx tilts his head to the side as he looks at her, confusion clear on his face.
“I’m just saying. I think this is awesome.” She grins at the guys. “Surrogacy is amazing.”
Is that what people think when they see us in the office for these appointments. I never even considered it.
“It is,” I agree, but tension fills the room, all of it rolling off the guys.
“It’s my child,” Jinx offers.
“She’s my woman,” Rocker adds.
“So, polyamory?” The technician grins, her head doing this little bob as she cocks an eyebrow up. “Bisexual guys are so hot.”
My jaw would be on the damn floor if I wasn’t lying on my back. I snort because honestly, what are the chances that this woman would be brave enough to open her mouth and get in our business this way. Most people save their off-the-wall opinions for social media where they can hide behind their screens with a small level of anonymity.
“We’re not gay,” Rocker snaps.
“Not that it would be your business if we were.”
I grin at both of the guys because I mean, let’s be honest, bisexual guys are really fucking hot. Or maybe it’s just me and my sexed-up brain. I don’t want to sleep with Jinx again, but watching these two go at it? I haven’t even considered adding that to my bucket list.
“You need to stop,” Rocker growls, but when I look at him, I find him looking down at me, not at the technician.
“That will never happen,” Jinx says, his eyes meeting mine as well.
“Too bad,” I whisper, the words leaving my mouth on a breathless pant.
Jesus, this is not the time or the place.
“Right?” The lady beside me chuckles with disappointment in her voice as she turns her attention back to the screen. “Ready to find out what you’re having?”
“A boy,” Jinx answers.
“Well,” she presses several more buttons on the machine, “actually…”
I feel like a terrible mother when disappointment hits me. I want a healthy baby first and foremost, but I think every parent has a preference.
“You’re right.”
“What?” My head snaps in her direction.
“It’s a boy.”
Both men whoop, hugging and clapping each other on the back like they’re the ones doing the heavy lifting around here.
“Congrats, man.” Rocker grins at his best friend before pulling him in for another hug.
“So hot,” she whispers from beside me and I have to nod my head in agreement.
But seriously, damn her for putting that shit in my head.
Once the pictures are printed, extra copies just in case, and the jelly has been wiped from my stomach, Rocker kisses my lips while Jinx lowers his head and presses his mouth to my belly, whispering how happy he is and all the things he’s excited to teach him.
“Now we just have to think of names,” I say as Rocker helps me off the table.
“Miles Jr. of course,” Jinx says with a cheesy grin that tells me he isn’t being serious.
“Callum Jr. has a nice ring to it.”
“What about Malum,” I joke, but the smiles fall from each of their faces. “It’s a mixture of both your names.”
“No,” Rocker says, his tone serious.
“Malum means evil in Latin,” Jinx adds.
“And how in the world would I know that?”
“That’s what we’re here for,” Rocker says, taking my hand and leading me out to the front desk to make my next appointment.
The billing lady tells me that their system is down, which I find weird since the lady working beside her is typing away on her computer, but I just shrug. I’ll get another bill in the mail. What’s one more at this point?
“Where are you off to?” I ask Jinx when we make it outside.
“Things to do and people to see,” he tells me with a smile, which means he’s got some hot chick lined up for a nooner. I mean what else
