Rocked (The Everyday Heroes World) - Julia Wolf Page 0,26

sorry, you’re right. I’m uptight about my scars around new people.”

“Kat,” I sighed. “You’ll find I’m as shallow as they come. So fucking shallow. But your scars aren’t ugly to me. I’m sure you were pretty as hell before you got them, but I didn’t know you then. I’m getting to know you now, and I like the way you look.”

Her frown told me she was unconvinced. “I saw you checking my arm out.”

“I’m only human. You’re telling me if I took my shirt off and had burns or slashes on my torso, you wouldn’t look? ’Cause I’ll take my shirt off if you need me to.”

Snorting, she tugged her hand away, and I let her. “Well…thank you then.” She poked my arm. “And I highly doubt I could beat you in arm wrestling. Rock climbing, though? Any day.”

“Oh, I have no doubt.”

Those green eyes glowed when she smiled. My insides coiled, and without thinking, I took a step toward her. Kat’s face took on a puzzled look and she lifted her hand between us, shoving me back.

“Come on. I have to go pick up Leroy.”

“Not Ells?”

“That’s cute you’re using her nickname.” She bit her bottom lip, hiding another smile. “And no, she’s with her dad until tomorrow. It’ll just be me and my bad boy tonight.”

“I’m flattered you want to spend the night with me, but what about Leroy?”

Shaking her head, she rubbed her temples. “You’re too much, Devon Chambers. Besides, I thought you were a ‘stand up lad.’ Now you’re claiming to be a bad boy?”

We finally made it to the parking lot, and Kat opened the back door of her truck, tossing her bag on the seat.

“Depends on the day.” I slung the crash pad into the truck and shut the door.

Kat held her keys in her hand, twirling them around one finger then catching them. She made no move to get in her truck, and I made no move to walk away.

She leaned against her door, raising her chin. I reached out and tugged the zipper of her hoodie down a few inches. “Shame to cover up all that pretty skin all the time,” I said.

Her lips tipped into a wry smile. “You must really be bored in this little town to be doing this. I’m sure if you find a bar, you’ll also find a willing groupie or two.”

“Kat.” I rested one of my hands on the truck beside her head, not caging her in, but coming close. “I just told you I think you’re hot as hell and you’re trying to pawn me off on some randoms? If I were a more sensitive man, my feelings would be hurt.” They would have been too, if I thought she meant a word she said. When I leaned closer, she didn’t push me away, and I gave her ample opportunity.

“What are you doing?” Her question came out thick and shaky as I dipped my head. She rubbed her lips together, and that was all I could focus on. Pink, pink lips, fuller than I remembered them being. When I brushed mine against them and she let out the sweetest little whimper, the twist in my gut tightened.

I was careful, more careful than I’d ever been, only touching her lips. Her hands rose to my chest, balling my T-shirt in her fists. Lips, chest—our sole points of contact.

Kat breathed into my mouth, parting her lips on a sigh. Our tongues touched, but just barely. Seemed we were both being careful, but that didn’t make this any less sweet, or my dick any less hard. I could have done this with her all day, exchanging these breathy, feathery kisses.

My hand slid from the truck to cup the back of her neck, my thumb brushing the corner of her jaw. She jerked, and her fists flattened, pushing me away.

I stepped back, letting my hand fall to my side, disappointed as hell kissing Kat was over before it even got started.

Her eyes flicked to mine. “You didn’t do anything wrong.” She rolled her lips between her teeth. “I’m just...that’s not a good idea.”

“Felt like a pretty damn good idea.” I tapped the side of her truck, needing to do something with my hands before I grabbed her and proved how damn good the idea really was. “Get in the truck, Lady. I’m going to be a gentleman and see you off.”

Straightening, she smoothed down her hoodie and zipped it up to her throat. She gave me one last look before
