he's not appeared anywhere. And Evandro seems to have taken over complete control of everything.
Emilia and I have been in the Colombian embassy for several days when there's a harsh knock on the door.
"Who would that be?" Emilia asks.
"I'm not sure. Get in the bedroom. Don't come out or unlock it unless I tell you."
"Why?"
I kiss the top of her head. "Precaution. Please go, ma belle."
She obeys, and I pull my Glock out of my bag, stick it in the back of my pants, then pull my shirt over it.
I open the door. "William. What are you doing here?"
"Where's Gustave?"
"I haven't seen him. Why?"
"Don't lie to me," he screams.
"Calm down," I growl. "What is going on?"
"You're here. Your whore is here. That means Gustave's whore will be here. Where is Penelope?"
I refrain from putting a bullet in his head for calling my wife a whore.
"William, I don't know where any of them are. I've not seen them since Belize."
His dark eyes are red from a lack of sleep, rage, or it could be a combination of both. "Gustave has the recording. I need it."
I play dumb. "What recording?"
His eyes turn to slits. "Evandro called me. Do you know what your brother has done?"
"I'm lost right now."
"Evandro has Louis. He's coming for me next."
A chill digs into my bones. I continue to deny any knowledge of what is going on. "What are you talking about?"
"The tape. He played Evandro a tape."
"I've not been privy to anything you are referring to."
William lunges at me, and I pull out my gun and stick it to his head. He freezes and holds his hands up.
Yeah, you coward.
Shoot him.
Emilia is in the next room.
My heart races. "Get the fuck, out. The next time I see you, this bullet is going in your head."
His eyes turn to slits. "Tell Gustave, I'm coming for him."
William leaves, and I shut the door and lock it. I pull my phone out and call Gustave.
"I was just calling you," he answers.
"William was here."
"So, Evandro called him?"
"Yes. He has Louis. He's coming after William next?"
Gustave's voice is emotionless. "Good. A car will be out front in ten minutes."
Goose bumps pop out on my skin. "He has her?"
"Yes."
I go into the room. Emilia jumps off the bed and throws her arms around me. "Are you okay?"
"Yes. Gustave called. He has her."
"Millie?" she whispers.
"Yes."
Tears come to ma belle's eyes. "Is she..." She swallows hard. "Is she okay?"
"I'm not sure. We need to leave."
Emilia and I get into the car waiting for us. We drive for over an hour then get into another vehicle with Gustave.
"Is she okay?" Emilia asks again.
Gustave nods. "Axel thinks so."
We wait for hours. It's past midnight when an SUV pulls up. Gustave rolls down his window.
Axel gets out. My insides flip. Not having the guys with me the last few months has been hard. They are my brothers. But they don't know my story, and there isn't time tonight to fill him in.
I'm not sure what Axel is going to think when I leave him with little answers.
He carries Millie to the car, gets in, then he gapes at Emilia and me.
I pull ma belle closer to me.
"Malin. Emilia. What are you doing here?" Axel asks.
I exchange a glance with Gustave. "Gustave and I have been working together."
Confusion fills Axel's face. "Working together?" He stares at Emilia's hand. She squeezes my thigh. He locks eyes with me.
Ma belle reaches out for Millie. Axel kisses Millie's head and hands her over. She's sleeping. Emilia's eyes fill with tears, and she kisses Millie's forehead.
"She has a picture of Penelope in her pocket I gave her. It brings her comfort but also some pain," Axel says.
Emilia nods.
Axel raises his eyebrows and waits for me to speak.
"Gustave is my brother."
A deep line creases between his eyes. "What are you talking about? You're an only child."
"There's no time to explain why I never told you about Gustave. We will make sure Millie gets to safety. It will take at least a week to arrange what needs to be done. All the women need to stay in Bermuda for now. Tell Andre not to let anyone leave. But you can't wait another minute. Penelope is in danger," I tell him.
The color drains from his face. "Where is she?"
"William is on his way back to Panama with her. And he's not happy," I inform him.
"What's going on?" Axel asks.
"Santiago, Jorge, and Jonas are all dead. But you need to leave. I've been with William for the
