out of the room.
I can tell something is really bothering him and I need to get to the bottom of it before he does something bad.
“Zay,” I call out. “Whatever it is, man, you need to tell me. I don’t want to pull a Jax and remind you of the rules, but I’m not gonna just let you silently stress out about shit either… We both know what happens when you refuse to deal with shit—you fucking explode and either you or someone else ends up getting hurt.” I give a pressing glance at the bag on the floor and then at his arms, where I know he probably has cut marks on his flesh. “And considering the fact that you’re wearing a long-sleeved shirt right now and moving really stiffly, I’m gonna guess that you’ve already taken it out on yourself a little bit.”
He grits his teeth. “Yeah, so what if I did? I don’t feed me any bullshit about the rules. We both know you don’t give a shit about them. Not really, anyway.”
I smile, but it’s totally fake. “Funny, but I’m pretty sure I said something similar to you last night when Jax set the rules about our Raven.”
“You need to stop calling her ours,” he tells me with annoyance.
I smirk. “Not gonna happen.” No, I like the sound of it way too much. Although, a small part of me wants to call her mine, but the feeling is so damn weird since I’ve never been the possessive type. “Now tell me what’s wrong.”
Zay shakes his head, looking beyond annoyed. “Look, there’s nothing really bothering me. I just … I don’t know … I feel like I know Raven from somewhere, but I have no fucking idea why.”
“Really?” I frown.
Holy effing shit.
“Why don’t you look that surprised?” he asks me suspiciously.
I shake my head. “Because … I swear it feels like I know her, too.”
Suddenly, those little white lines purring inside me start to silence and worry pricks its way to the surface.
“How could we possibly both feel like we know her?” I lean back and rake my fingers through my hair, tension working its way through my body.
Fuck, I really wish I’d done a few more lines.
Maybe I will before we leave …
“I have no idea.” He cracks his knuckles and bounces his leg up and down, revealing his anxiety.
I eye him over, wondering if he’s keeping something from me. “You have no memories of her at all?”
He shakes his head, his gaze dissecting me as carefully as mine is him. “But my mind’s shit when it comes to memories. Yours, however …” He cocks a brow at me.
“I just have a feeling …” I trail off. “Or, well, there is one thing.”
When I give a short pause, he grows impatient. “Just spit it out, brother,” he snaps, scratching his forehead.
“I’m not sure what it means,” I start. “Or if it means anything. But, when Raven was standing on the bridge, surrounded by snow, looking so fucking gorgeous, I swear … well, I swear I’ve seen that exact moment before. It wasn’t like I was remembering an old memory. It was almost like a photograph inside my head.” When he gives me a confused look, I shrug. “I know it sounds weird. That’s why I was so hesitant to tell you.”
Zay restlessly taps his foot against the mats covering the floor. “You think we know her somehow?”
I shake my head. “Doubtful. I mean, how could we know her yet neither of us can actually remember anything about her? More than likely, she probably just looks like someone we know.” But I feel like I’m lying when I say the words aloud.
Zay massages his knuckles, staring off into space for a moment. “She has a really unique look about her, though. I mean, that hair and those eyes … the violet tints in both … that’s kinda rare.”
I’ve spent a lot of time photographing people to know he’s right. In fact, the first time I ever laid eyes on Raven, I wanted to photograph her. And not just because she’s gorgeous, but because she has such a unique look about her. And those haunted eyes of hers … Fuck, they’d make for an amazing, emotional photo.
One of these days, I’m going to talk her into letting me photograph her.
I shake my head. Shit, I’m already getting obsessed. I can’t let Jax know, or he’s going to set more rules.
