head out of the kitchen as if expecting some sort of trick. “You never want takeout.”
“Like I said, it’s a special occasion.”
“It’s more than just the settlement too,” Candor pipes up. “It’s the start of something new for all three of us, right? Moving in together is more of a cause to celebrate than the money.”
Leon’s suspicion evaporates, and his smile returns. “You guys are gonna spoil me.”
“There’s only one condition,” I say, folding my arms. “You need to take the test.”
Leon slowly slinks out of the kitchen, and the anxious expression from earlier is back in full force.
“Whatever the test says, the three of us are in it together.” I give him a hug.
“Besides, if you’re pregnant and you don’t take it, you’re still pregnant,” Candor points out. “But the sooner we know, the sooner you can go see a doctor who can keep both you and the baby healthy.”
“And if you’re not, that just means we didn’t try hard enough.” I wink.
Leon struggles to keep from smiling but ultimately fails. “Fine. I’ll take the test. But I expect you two to have something amazing waiting for me when I get out of the bathroom.”
“Chinese?” Candor asks me as Leon withdraws into the bathroom.
“That’s always a good option.”
“Extra wontons!” Leon’s muffled voice shouts through the closed door.
I chuckle and wink at Candor. “You heard the man. Extra wontons.”

Five minutes later, our takeout is on the way, and Lucius and I are sitting outside the bathroom door waiting anxiously. When Leon emerges, his expression is oddly blank.
“What’s wrong?” I ask when he avoids meeting my eyes.
Leon shakes his head. “Nothing, really.”
“Lee?” Lucius’s tone is gentle but laced with concern.
Leon holds out the pregnancy test. “It’s negative,” he says as Lucius takes it from him. “I’m not pregnant.”
His voice breaks, and a moment later, he bursts into tears and drops onto his knees, burying his head in my lap. “I was so scared at first, but the whole time we were talking, I kept thinking about how much I wanted it. I kept telling myself that I’d be okay no matter what the test said. I didn’t think I actually cared all that much, but then...nothing showed up. Not even a faint line. There’s nothing.”
His shoulders shake as he unburdens himself. I’m not gonna lie, this whole thing has been an emotional roller coaster for me too. It might not be exactly the same, but I have some idea of what he might be feeling. Even with that, though, I have no idea what I can possibly say to soothe him.
All I can do is gently stroke his hair while I feel useless.
Lucius lays a hand on my shoulder and nods toward the sofa. I know what he’s trying to tell me. We might not have the words to make him feel better, but we might be able to make him more comfortable while he works through this.
“Babe, let’s go into the living room.” I gently coax him to his feet. “We’ll hold you until you feel better.”
Leon sniffles as he lets himself be guided over to the sofa. His face is red and blotchy, his eyes are bloodshot. He looks so miserable that it breaks my heart.
It takes a few minutes for us to get situated. I sit down first, and Leon curls up in the space beneath my arm. Lucius sits down beside him, draping Leon’s legs across his lap so he can give him a foot massage.
“It just doesn’t make sense,” Leon says, sliding down so his head is resting on my lap. He turns his tear-stained face toward the ceiling. “I should’ve gotten pregnant.”
“It’s not a sure thing, is it?” Admittedly, I’m poorly educated when it comes to the omega reproductive system.
“Near enough.” Leon laughs dryly. “An omega in heat is pretty much guaranteed to get pregnant. That’s why suppressants are such a big deal. Well, that, and the fact that everyone loses their damn minds around an omega in heat.”
“So, what exactly are you saying?” Lucius asks. “Did we do something wrong? Or...”
“There’s not a lot of ways to get pregnant.” Leon chuckles to himself. “An alpha knots an omega, omega gets pregnant.”
“So, is it because both of us did it?” I hate even suggesting that, but it’s the only thing that comes to mind.
“No.” Leon sits up abruptly, immediately rejecting that idea. “That’s not it. We’re not the only triad in the world. Hell, Farron, the guy who owns Omega for Hire is part of
