looked at my surroundings. Caleb’s room.

“Where are the others?” I asked.

“Arguing with the Fae adults,” Tom said. “Gary is standing guard outside the door.”

I stood and Caleb reached for me. Using my powers, I made a barrier so he couldn’t touch me. “Do not touch me.”

“Sarah, he healed you. He saved your life,” Tom scolded.

“He’s still withholding information,” I said staring right into Caleb’s eyes. “He hasn’t told us the complete truth. His plans for me aren’t yet fulfilled, are they?”

Caleb’s jaw clenched.

I nodded and stepped around him. “I thought so.”

Gary pulled me into a hug when I stepped out of the room. “Sarah,” he croaked.

I squeezed him and then pulled away. “Come on, we have a war to end.”

“War?” Gary asked.

Gary and Tom walked on each side of me and Caleb walked behind us. My senses were slightly different, and I was able to find the guys and Fae in the dining hall just by sensing their magic. I could also tell that it was night time now.

All eyes turned to me as I entered. With sure steps, I walked to the platform at the front of the room where the unconscious Triune and Chelle lay.

“This is my final statement,” I said, looking at the Fae adults. “You are free. Leave here if you don’t want to be part of this. If you want a war, this is a great way to start one. If you want freedom and peace, leave.”

The Fae leader stepped towards me, but Caleb blocked his path. “You will not harm her.”

“Why are you protecting her? Weren’t you the one telling me how you planned to break the cycle and end their rule?” the Fae leader asked.

Pain coursed through my chest. He had planned on getting rid of me.

“That was before,” Caleb said. “And I never wanted this. Not like this. Not by killing her.”

“You healed her,” the leader gasped. “You gave her part of you, formed a bond to save her. She’s bewitched you.”

Formed a bond?

“Back down,” Caleb said. “Or you and I will have to settle things outside.”

“I knew you were compromised. I knew you wouldn’t be able to withstand her bewitching. That’s why I had a backup plan.” The leader clapped, the lights went out, and chaos exploded.

Vampires swarmed in, attacked the guys, and one grabbed me.

I screamed and tried to use my magic, but almost dying had depleted my magic stores and I couldn’t do anything.

The vampire holding me leaped out of the room and ran out of the mansion.

“Gary!” I screamed and continued to struggle against the vampire’s vice-like grip.

Teeth sank into my shoulder, and my desire to fight disappeared.

If only Nick had been here.

The vampire ran out into the woods, away from Moon Academy, and all I could do was wait for my death. Or whatever they planned to do with me.

They were too strong, and I was too weak.

Maybe this was for the best.

The vampire stopped running and set me down, leaning me against the trunk of a tree. “We’ll wait here for the others,” he said.

I couldn’t even open my mouth to respond.

The vampire was tall, lanky, and had an extremely crooked nose. Had he been born with it like that or had it been broken a few too many times to heal properly?

The forest was quiet, not even insects clicking or making noise.

Because of the vampire? Or something else?

To my left, a large shadow moved.

A bear?

The vampire squatted down beside me, brushed my hair to the side, and said, “Just a small drink won’t hurt.”

His mouth lowered and just as his lips touched my neck, the shadow closed the distance and pulled the vampire away.

I watched the vampire and shadow fight, but in the darkness, couldn’t make out much.

The sound of bones breaking was unmistakable, and I cringed.

With the vampire dead, his spell over me broke free. I bolted to my feet and away from the shadow as fast as I could. I dodged around the trees, using them to slow the shadow down.

I made it back to the school only to be tackled by another vampire. He snarled in my face. “You’ve caused us enough problems. Time to end this.”

He drew back to punch me, but the shadow tackled him, sending them both rolling across the driveway.

Only with the driveway lights, I could finally see what the shadow actually looked like.

“Nick,” I gasped.

Chapter Twelve

The change had done quite a bit to Nick. He had always been muscular, but now it was like his muscle mass
