You think you’re doing a good job of hiding it, but you’re not. You’re not doing yourself any good by denying what is meant to be. You love him so much, Sara. Go back to him. It’s not too late.”
“Grace, I—”
Just then her phone rang with a Facetime call.
“Hello, Richard.”
“Hello, Grace. Everything good over there?”
“Everything is great. I have Sara here with me.”
“Excellent. I would like to speak with her.”
I sat there in confusion, for I didn’t know what the hell was going on when she handed me the phone.
“Dr. Sara Davis, it’s finally nice to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you. I’m Doctor Richard Howell, head trauma surgeon over at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan.”
“Hi, Dr. Howell.”
“Grace told me all about you and how excellent your surgical skills are. She sent over your credentials, and after reviewing them, you’re exactly what Lenox Hill Hospital needs right now. I have a trauma fellowship position available and I’m holding it for you if you’re interested.”
I looked over at Grace, who had a big smile on her face. “Go home.” She mouthed.
“Yes, Dr. Howell. I’m interested. I’m definitely interested.”
“Excellent. I’ll give you time to get back to New York and get settled. Your fellowship will start one week from today. Is that enough time?”
“More than enough time. Thank you. Thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome. I look forward to having you here with us. Enjoy the rest of your night.”
“You too, Dr. Howell. I’ll see you next week.”
“Bye, Richard,” Grace said as she ended the call.
“I don’t know how—”
“You don’t need to say anything. I know being a trauma surgeon is your dream, and your dream of both trauma and love awaits you in New York.”
“Thank you so much.” I hugged her.
“You’re welcome. Just promise me you’ll keep in touch.”
“I will. I definitely will.”
“We had you over for dinner because one, we like you, and two, we wanted to do this for you outside of the hospital. Plus, we know we won’t see you after tonight for a long time. When you get back to the hotel, make sure you pack because your flight leaves tomorrow morning at six thirty a.m. with a two-hour layover in Detroit and arriving in New York at five-thirty p.m.”
“Sorry about that,” Jamieson spoke. “It was the only flight with the best option that would get you into New York early. For some reason, the airlines didn’t offer any direct flights.”
“You two are amazing people. Please let me pay you for the ticket.”
“Absolutely not,” Jamieson said. “It’s our gift to you. Consider it a congratulations gift.”
“Congratulations?” I smiled.
“On the new fellowship and reuniting with the love of your life.”
I looked down as a thought entered my head.
“What’s wrong, Sara?” Grace asked.
“What if Mason moved on?”
“Oh, sweetie. I doubt it. From what you told me, he loves you more than life and he’s just not going to get over it that quickly.”
I thanked them both again and headed to the hotel. I couldn’t believe I was going home tomorrow. I’d just hoped Mason would be happy to see me.
While I was in the Detroit Airport waiting for my next flight, I found a Starbucks and grabbed a coffee. I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings as I took my coffee from the counter and quickly turned around, bumping into someone and almost spilling the contents of my cup on them.
“Oh, excuse—Nathan?” I stood there in shock as I looked up.
“Sara? What the hell?” He hugged me. “What are you doing in Detroit?”
“I’m coming home, Nathan.”
“What? Are you serious?”
“Yes. Please don’t tell anyone. How is Mason?”
“Let me grab a cup of coffee and we’ll go sit down and talk.”
He ordered his coffee, and as soon as it was ready, we took a seat on a bench nearby.
“I can’t believe you’re here. Are you on flight 315?”
“Yes.”
“That’s the plane I’m flying back to New York.” He smiled.
“Wow. I can’t believe this. I can’t believe I’m talking to you, here, in Detroit.”
“Fate, Sara. Fate. I was never a believer in that until I met Allison.”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“To answer your question about Mason, he’s a total hot mess. I’ve never seen him like that before and I don’t ever want to again. Why the sudden change of mind?”
“Because I can’t get over him. I love him too much, Nathan. And Grace, the trauma surgeon I was working under, knew it. So, she told me to go home.”
“That was nice of her. What about your fellowship?”
“I start next week at
