particular episode has probably already lasted longer than my other experiences.”

His mouth moved across her shoulder, dropping kisses that sweetly singed her. “You won’t get that with me. I’ve wanted this for a very long time. Sex with my ex-wife was quick, too. She didn’t like to mess up her hair and I didn’t really know what I wanted.” Those fingers delved deeper, getting closer and closer to her core. “I do now.”

“What do you want, Macon?”

“I want a lover. Not someone who indulges me because she thinks that’s what she’s required to do in a relationship. I want a woman who craves me with her heart and soul because I’m the only one who can make her wet and ready simply by looking at her. It doesn’t take a ton of experience to know that a woman needs time and patience to achieve her maximum potential, but it’s more than simply giving to you. I want to sink into you, to know your body better than I know my own. I want to spend hours kissing every inch of you. And I want you to trust me enough to let me take control.”

“That’s going to be hard for me.” Although it did seem to be working. Her body was primed in a way it never had been before. “But I think we can do the sex part now. I think I’m ready.”

His hands came out and he took a step back. She was left standing there alone and blind. “You’re not ready until I say you’re ready.”

He was in control. Yeah, she got that. “Sorry.”

“I don’t buy that for a second, but when I’m done you’ll understand the difference between being wet enough for sex and being ready to make love. If all you want is another man on top of you, you should find someone else.”

“I don’t want that. I want you. Don’t push me away. I’m trying this for the first time. You have no idea how hard I’m trying.” Her instincts told her to protect herself, that this would all go bad in the end and if she made herself truly vulnerable to him he would tear her apart. But she stood there. She didn’t tear the scarf off, didn’t tell him to go to hell. She wanted him more than she wanted to be safe.

“Hey, I’m sorry.” He was in front of her now, his big body brushing against hers as his mouth hovered right over her lips. “I’ve got triggers, too, baby. Please don’t tell me to hurry up and get it over with. I meant what I said before. I want more this time. I can’t settle for getting off. I need to mean something to you. I need the sex to be meaningful.”

“It already means more to me than you can know. I’ll stop pushing. Please don’t stop touching me.”

He kissed her, his mouth more demanding than before. His hands found her hips, dragging her into the heat of his body. She found herself deliciously crushed against him as his mouth mated with hers.

He finally moved away. “I’m going to take you to the bed now.”

She was ready for him to take her hand and lead her back, but she gasped as he hooked an arm under her legs and she was pulled up into the air. There was a moment of fear because she couldn’t see and she was utterly dependent on him, but this was Macon. She relaxed and let him carry her.

“I will try my hardest not to trip, baby,” he said with a chuckle.

It was good to hear him laugh after all the seriousness of before. Even if he did trip, this was the type of man who would do everything he could to take the pain for himself. He would kill himself to make sure she didn’t get hurt.

He was also the type of man who would be so hurt if he ever found out why she’d come here. Given everything that had happened to him, he wouldn’t trust easily.

She needed time with him, needed for him to become so comfortable with her, he wouldn’t walk away. She only needed a few weeks. A month, perhaps. Maybe after she married him.

God, she was in love with Macon Miles and she wanted to marry him.

He settled her on top of the covers. Like everything she’d been given since she’d met this man, the bed was lush and comfortable. Her life had become easy in a way it never
