Lured into Love (Blossom in Winter #2) - Melanie Martins Page 0,167

see the disappointment they bear.

“It has nothing to do with trust,” he replies, sounding quite sure of himself. “It’s just something that belongs in the past. We have to focus on the present, on us.”

“It’s because of your past that our present is how it is,” I snap back. “It’s because of your past that I’m gonna have to fight for my freedom.” Taking a breath to calm myself down, I finish by saying, “A past I know nothing about.”

“Petra, stop.”

But I’m too curious to even consider it. “What are you so afraid of, huh?” I ask, staring right through him. “That I’m gonna call the cops on you?”

As our eyes lock, his brow creases, either hurt or confused by my question. “Of course not.”

“So why don’t you tell me the truth?” I ask again. But his gaze drops to the ground, searching for an answer. “Fuck, I need to know what’s going on.”

“No, you don’t!” he barks, his piercing blue eyes defying mine. The sharpness in his voice tears my heart in two. “You don’t need to know shit.” And a thick, toxic tension fills the space between us as he blows out a breath and adds, “I love you, and I’m ready to go to court and face a lot of backlash for you.” He pauses, letting my anxiety and torment hammer against my ribs. “But you have to accept the fact that I won’t share certain things with you.” And hearing this, my heart stops. I press my lips tightly together to prevent a sob of agony. I’m so hurt by his lack of trust that I need to focus on my breathing to avoid losing my mind and shouting things that I’d regret later on and would only carve a deeper hole between us. “Now, if you excuse me, I’ve got some calls to make.” Alex doesn’t even try to kiss or embrace me. Nope. He just rushes back inside the house and leaves me alone, ruminating on my own fate and on everything we just went through. One thing is for sure: whatever my mom has against my dad and Alex seems to be dark and serious enough to put them in jail for a long, long time.

And while I knew something was off, I always hoped that one day or another, when the right moment came, he’d open up and tell me the truth. But now that he’s made it clear he’ll never do so, how am I supposed to trust him when I know nothing about his past? And that alone is enough for me to wonder, what kind of man am I marrying? And most importantly, how far should I go for him when he doesn’t trust me like I trust him? Without knowing such an important part of him, it seems impossible to answer.

Thank you to my editor, Tiffany, for being with me since the beginning of this journey. You are not only an amazing editor, but also an incredible person. I’m so happy to have you in my life.

To all the influencers and bloggers who have spent their free time reading, reviewing, and sharing this series online and offline. I love you guys!

To those who inspired me for the second book:

My life partner, best friend, and compagnon de route, Diogo, thank you for always standing by my side and trusting my craziness. Ten years with you feels like ten minutes.

My Roy Van Gatt—my dear friend Roy, thank you as always for all your support, loyalty, and kind words. You are the only friend I annoy so much about my work, and honestly I wouldn’t do otherwise. Your life and work ethics are a true inspiration. Oh, and I promise I will visit you soon, and congratulations for your newly acquired castle in Scotland.

Mona, I told you I will put you in the saga, and here you are! You are just as beautiful and also living your best life in a sunny island, partying and drinking fancy cocktails as always! I miss you a lot and hope to catch up soon in one of our favorite lounges this summer.

Now working on the third book of the saga, Lured into Lies, which will also be released in 2021. I’m so excited for the judiciary battles, secrets, and revelations, I can’t wait for you guys to read it!
