was why they’d stopped. How far would they have gone if it hadn’t?
Chapter Fourteen
Trudging along behind the Director, or Bart as I’d learned, I wondered how anyone could handle this life. I was exhausted and all I had done was sit and talk with people.
“You did very well,” he said as we entered the elevator to go to the dining hall. “I’ve already received requests for repeat interviews in a couple months from three of today’s interviewers.” His head was down, his attention on the emails he responded to.
“Thanks. I never realized how taxing it could be to do these interviews. I have a new respect for you and all those who are forced to do them so often.”
He chuckled softly.
The doors opened, and I hurried out with a quick, “Bye.” Thankfully, he didn’t take offense to me fleeing his company because I’d informed him I was starving on the way here.
A few heroes greeted me, some smiled, and others ignored me.
Just another day in the high school that was the Hero Association.
I managed not to roll my eyes and got into line to order some food.
“Hey,” Austin said as he joined me in line.
I smiled up at him. “Hey.”
“You okay? You look exhausted.”
I put my hands on my hips. “That is a horrible way to start a conversation with a woman!”
He chuckled. “I’m sorry. You look beautiful as always, but you seem a bit more slouched. Are you okay?”
We moved forward in line. “I had a full day of interviews. It was much more exhausting than I thought it would be.” My stomach growled loudly. “And I haven’t eaten much today.”
“Why don’t you find a seat and rest while I get us both some food?” he offered.
I watched Austin, looking for signs of injury, but he didn’t show any. He’d asked to reschedule our date last night due to an emergency he had been dispatched to.
Alura and I had watched the battle together in my room. Austin had been thrown into a few buildings, but his stone gargoyle form prevented injuries most of us would have sustained.
I did as he asked and found a table with empty seats.
He sat beside me and put two trays of food in front of the both of us. “I wasn’t sure what you wanted, so just take what you want and I’ll eat whatever you don’t want.”
Faced with so much food, I didn’t feel as hungry anymore. I still took the chicken pasta and ate at least half of it.
He ate everything else and looked like he wanted seconds.
“You okay?”
He nodded. “Abnormally hungry lately.”
My brows furrowed. Was that a reason to be worried? Or did that just mean he was working too much?
“You should take a snack back to your room. You’ll probably get hungry in an hour again.”
I stood and nodded. “Yeah, that’s a good idea.”
Between one step and the next, my reality had time warped. Somehow, I was back at the table with food and Austin was talking with Hurricane and Vortex.
“Wh...” I rubbed my face and eyes.
“You okay?” Hurricane asked, reaching across the table and setting his hand on my arm.
Everything wavered before my eyes.
I rubbed them again and when I opened them, I sat on my bed in my room with Hurricane, Vortex, Austin, and Alura frowning down at me.
“What’s wrong with me?” I asked.
“Maybe she’s just stressed from the interviews today?” Vortex suggested.
Alura shook her head. “No, her aura is wrong. Someone’s drugged her or something.” she chewed on her lower lip. “We can’t trust the doctors here.”
“What? We can’t?” Hurricane asked. He looked at Austin who scowled hard.
“Call him,” Alura whispered.
I shook my head. “He’s not my damn personal physician.”
She rolled her eyes. “No, but he’s qualified to be one. And, he won’t say no to you.”
“It’s probably not anything serious,” I countered.
“Your aura can’t lie,” she snapped.
“Who are we talking about?” Vortex asked.
“Call him or I will,” Alura threatened.
“You don’t have his number.” I scoffed.
She held up my phone with a smirk.
I narrowed my eyes. “No. If something had happened, Alfred would have stopped it.”
“Alfred?” Austin asked.
“Not if it was a drugged drink or food. He wouldn’t know,” she argued.
“I’m fine, I—”
The world tilted and then I was on the phone with it ringing
“Hey, how was your first day?” Tyson asked as soon as he picked up.
“Um... are you busy tonight? It seems something may have hap—”
“She’s been drugged,” Alura yelled loud enough for him to hear.
“Alfred, scan!” Tyson yelled into my ear.
To my left, a
