at headquarters and I’m okay. I need to talk to you, though. I’m not sure I’ll be able to break away tonight. Tomorrow, we have our date, so I’ll tell you everything then. I hope you’re okay.”

Unsure how to end it, I just hung up.

Hurricane smiled when I exited. “Ready for food and booze?”

I nodded. “Definitely.”

Chapter Eleven

One of my flaws was relationship-related. Not just romantic relationships, but friendships, too.

The flaw was that I was pretty much black or white with them. Either I loved you or I didn’t.

I had loved Cobalt, but after what he did and how he treated me, I lost that love for him.

As I sat with Hurricane and Vortex, I felt my mind already trying to make itself up about the duo.

“Another drink?” Vortex asked.

I nodded and slid him my glass. “Thanks.” Once he left the table, I turned to Hurricane. “So, what did you want to discuss with me?”

He set his drink down and asked, “Vortex and I want to date you. You said you’re not committing to anyone and are keeping everything quiet, which is perfect for us.”

I considered him a long moment. “Are you two lovers?”

He chuckled. “Every woman asks us that. No, we’re completely heterosexual. We just enjoy sharing.”

Vortex returned, set my drink in front of me, and sat to my left. “What are you talking about? You both look super serious.”

“Sharing,” I answered.

He choked on his drink, coughed and wiped his face. He looked at Hurricane.

“You asked while I was gone?”

“I asked,” I clarified. “He told me he wanted to talk earlier.”

Vortex asked, “And?”

“You’re both hot, and Hurricane totally earned some points when he punched Cobalt today.” In addition to all the other things. “But I’m not sure how I’m going to handle this.”

Two men was going to be complicated as it was, but four? I would have to work out a schedule.

But dating so many would open up a lot more risk of being caught.

“There are a lot of places, secret and unknown by outsiders, that we can take you for dates,” Hurricane said.

“No cameras allowed,” Vortex added.

“You two could have any woman you wanted. Why me? Because I’m the new girl? To get at Cobalt?” I hated that I had to ask. I hated that my self-consciousness made my heart ache as I waited for their answers.

Hurricane scowled.

Vortex smiled softly.

“Lucy!” Alura yelled and hugged me tightly from behind.

The interruption would have bothered me, but I could never be upset at my friend for caring.

Patting her arm to request release, I assured her, “I’m fine.”

She spun my chair around and gave me her best glare. “You left your phone in the locker. I couldn’t even message you.”

I swiveled my chair back around and pointed at the empty seat to my right. “Sit and I’ll get you a drink.”

She did, and then her mouth popped open when she looked at Vortex and Hurricane. “I interrupted something. I can leave.”

What did she see when she looked at them? Sparkles again?

“Don’t be absurd.” I scoffed. “You’re not going anywhere.”

She fidgeted in her seat. “You sure?”

I hopped down and nodded. “I’ll get you a drink.”

Before I rounded the table, Hurricane stood and followed. “I’m buying tonight, remember?”

I smiled up at him and continued walking towards the bar, which was growing busier by the minute. “You don’t have to pay for my friend.”

He slapped a bill on the bar top. “I’m buying.”

Leaning my hip against the bar while we waited for the bartender to finish with a man three people over, I studied him.

“You’re serious about…this? About me?”

He leaned down and whispered, “We don’t give two shits about Cobalt. You’re pretty, nice, and we want to get to know you better. I haven’t felt such an intense urge to protect someone. I also haven’t felt such a strong desire to just be near a woman ever before. You call to me in ways I can’t explain. Not just because you’re elemental, too. It’s something else. I want to see what it is.”

“Dating me will be complicated,” I whispered. I didn’t want to admit that I felt the same urges.

He straightened and offered a cocky smile. “I never back down from a challenge.”

“What’ll you have?” the bartender asked.

“Pitcher of margaritas, blended,” I ordered.

This bar was inside the Hero Association headquarters. Here, I could be a little less discreet, but when we left, even if we went to a hero’s only place, I had to be careful.

Hurricane studied me a moment and said, “Just give us a
