Love Her - Andrea Johnston Page 0,42

with mine and the feeling is a direct shot to my dick. I pull back before we get too carried away in the parking lot.

Wrapping both arms around her, I hug her to my body and she . . . laughs? She’s laughing. Not a sweet giggle or even a guffaw. Nope, this is a full body laugh. The kind that makes you shake.

“Umm . . . I don’t think I’ve ever kissed a woman to the point of delirium. Thanks?”

Wiping her eyes, she steps back. “I’m not delirious. I cannot believe we just made out in the parking lot of my job in the middle of the day. It’s like we’re a couple of teenagers. How embarrassing.”

My smile falls at her words. “I didn’t think. I’m sorry. I—”

“Stop. I’m not upset. We’re just a little old to act like this in public, don’t you think?”

“Maybe,” I comment with a shrug. “I can’t say it won’t happen again.”

Lifting to her toes, she places a kiss to my chin. “I should get back to work.”

I reach for her as she steps away, laughing. I like her this way. Laughing and smiling. It makes me feel like I’m ten feet tall. Just as I’m about to call her name, my phone rings. Owen.

“Hold on. Hey, Lis?”

Turning to face me, she walks backward, the smile never leaving her face.

“Have a good rest of your day.”

“You too.”

I watch as she walks into the building before bringing the phone to my ear and moving around the truck to the driver’s side. “What’s up?”

“Hello, Owen. How are you? Good to hear. I’m well, thanks for asking,” he says dryly.

“Whatever. I can always hang up and you can call again.”

“Just wanted to make sure you were going to make it to practice tonight.”

Turning the key, the engine roars to life. The late morning sun is shining bright, warming the interior. I turn on the air conditioning and wait for it to do its job.

“Yep. All set. I’ll see you around five.”

We finish the call and I pull out of the parking lot. Six hours until practice and I see Lis again.

Chapter 16

Hell in a handbasket. That’s what happened to this day. Connor’s text about coffee made me smile and I don’t think it fell for hours. His kiss didn’t hurt either. I still can’t believe we were making out like teenagers. If one of our patients had seen us, I would have been mortified. Okay, maybe not mortified but thoroughly embarrassed for sure.

If only that possible humiliation was the worst of the day. It wasn’t. At some point, Mercury slipped into retrograde. The printer stopped working, then the computer froze, and when it restarted, the billing program wasn’t accessible. Add to that three back-to-back appointments more than twenty minutes late, we were running so far behind I’m leaving the office two hours later than planned. Thankfully, my mom was able to get Jacob ready for baseball practice and as long as a cow doesn’t decide to cross the road and slow me down, I should have no problem making it there in time to watch at least fifteen minutes of my little boy on the baseball field.

It doesn’t hurt that a certain assistant coach will be there either. Seeing each other tonight won’t be the same as earlier, I know that for a fact. There will be no canoodling in front of the other parents and absolutely not in front of Jacob or my mom. Of course, nothing would make my mother happier than me dating someone but considering Jacob has never seen me with anyone but his father, I doubt he’d have the same reaction.

Actually, I don’t know that he has many memories of me with Michael. The last few years of our marriage were more of a business relationship than that of a couple in love. Clearly by the way he left things, love may never have been a factor. No. I won’t do it. I won’t let him creep into my thoughts and distract me from all I’ve accomplished.

When I’m driving to work in the morning, thirty miles feels like five. I hardly have enough time for a full podcast before I’m pulling into the parking lot. Yet, driving back to Lexington when I’m looking forward to being somewhere else, the miles seem to take twice as long.

Showing up to practice in my work clothes isn’t ideal. I’d rather be in a pair of comfy jeans than dress pants and a sweater, but here
