Lost in the Silence - A.R. Breck Page 0,84

their last location in the south of Texas. They’re in the desert, surrounded by nothing but sand. It’s going to be hard to infiltrate their perimeter with a group of men. We stopped last night on the border of Texas and Louisiana in some seedy motel. We didn’t have many options though, and we needed to come up with our next plan.

“They’re getting ready. They must be making their move to cross the border.” The PI says over the phone.

My entire body stiffens, my muscles locking up and my fists gripping the arms rests. “When?” We’re still far away. Hours and hours from reaching them. We should have gotten closer. Fear and fury lick at me when I think of Cara. I don’t know how she is. I don’t know what she’s gone through. My mind completely blacks out when it starts going there. The rage consumes me.

“Tomorrow, I’m betting. We have to make our move. A few guys are loading things up, but it doesn’t look like they’re leaving quite yet. We have a little time, but not much.”

I look at Easton, and his nostrils flare as he starts pacing and running his hands through his hair. “How do we get in there? How are we supposed to make our way to them without being seen? I’ve been going through it over and over in my mind. It’s a fucking death sentence.” He growls.

The PI sighs. “I don’t know, but you guys need to think it up fast if you want to save the girl. I’m going to get back there, see if I can listen in and get some intel. There is one thing, though. I felt like you guys needed to know.”

My nose starts burning as the scenarios stack in my mind. I think about turning around and leaving so I don’t have to hear anything else when Easton levels me a look. “What is it?” He snaps at the PI, not angry at him, just angry in general.

“The only time I was able to get close was when a group of them were packing up. They were loading a van, cackling. It’s not just Cara.”

My eyes widen.

“What?” I growl.

“There are four of them. Four girls.”

Four girls that they plan to bring over the border and introduce into the sex trade. Train them and sell them off to live in a nightmare forever.

“Well, did they say Cara’s name? Did you hear them talk about them at all? Say any names? Easton grabs the phone, bringing it with him as he begins pacing again.

The PI pauses, and I can feel the unease soaking through the phone. “They’re not well, guys. These guys… they’re animals. Sexually abusing these girls. Hurting them. Laughing about it. I think there are minors.” He sighs heavily. “You guys need to take care of these maggots. Drop them in the ocean, I don’t care. These are the type of people that don’t deserve to live.”

“We’ll call you back.” Easton says, hanging up the phone and tossing it on the table. Irritation clear as day in his posture.

I can’t do anything. I can’t say anything. The whooshing in my ears grows louder as the seconds go on, getting so loud that when Easton speaks to me, I can only see his lips moving.

Cara.

Someone is touching Cara.

Abusing her.

Touching what’s mine.

I look down, cocking my fist back and laying one into my thigh. Then the other. I go back and forth, pummeling my thighs, begging for them to feel something. Anything. I can’t sit here, waiting, while Cara sits hundreds of miles away in who know what conditions getting fucking molested by a bunch of grungy ass fucks.

A fierce slap comes across my face like a crack, and the whooshing stops. I look at Easton, and he’s scowling down at me. “Get your shit together, Jackson! Fucking hell!” He runs his hands down his face.

Cara.

I press my hands onto the arms rests, pushing myself to a stand. Again, I try to make my legs work when they’ve given no indication that they will.

“Sit the fuck down, Jackson! Quit trying this stupid ass shit.”

I fall forward, losing my balance and tumbling face first towards the ground. I land in a heap, and Easton immediately pulls me off the disgusting ground and back into my chair. Once I’m seating, he punches me right in the eye. “You’re a fucking idiot.”

I bring my arm back without a second thought, flying it forward and landing a hit right in his jaw.
