come up with a safeword or something?”

Bailey kissed Logan gently and pulled away to smile at him. “We doing something kinky this time?”

Logan grinned and kissed him again. “Maybe.”

“Yeah, yeah. I don’t have a safeword. I need to think of a good one.”

“Meatloaf!” Aleron yelled from below, and Bailey about jumped out of his skin.

“What? I’m not making meatloaf. I’m in the middle of something here!”

“Not making meatloaf! That should be your safeword.”

“What?”

Scout began to laugh so hard he doubled over. “Oh my Goddess, that’s a great one.”

“What’s so funny?” Bailey asked.

Logan groaned. “Because I would do anything for love…”

“But I won’t do that.” Bailey glared down at Aleron. “You’re an idiot. No dessert for you.”

“What? It’s a good one. Who says meatloaf in the middle of sex? It’s a good word, and it does what you need it to do.”

“Fair point,” Bailey said. “Meatloaf it is. And speaking of, someone who isn’t me is in charge of dinner. Logan and I are going to be busy.”

“Awww, Mommy and Daddy are going to go have some private time,” Aleron said.

Bailey wanted to growl at him, but he didn’t have to. Gideon swiped Aleron’s legs out from under him. Scout sat on his chest. “I’ll make sure he pays for that,” Scout said.

“No need,” Bailey said with a smile as he walked down the stairs. “He’s not allowed to eat my food for an entire day. Nothing. No snacks, no meals, no nothing.”

“I was kidding,” Aleron said. “Come on, Bails. I made you laugh.”

“You did. You also can afford to take everyone to dinner, so make like a bread truck and haul buns. Be sure to lock the doors behind you. Bye-bye.”

Bailey marched through the warehouse and to the door to Logan’s apartment. He didn’t even have to look behind him to know Logan followed in his footsteps. He could feel him, and the moment they were through the doorway and Logan had pushed it shut, he grabbed Bailey and pulled him in for a steamy kiss that Bailey felt all the way to his toes.

“Whoa.”

“That was the hottest thing I’ve ever seen. Also, ‘make like a bread truck’?”

“What? It’s better than make like a tree and leave.”

“True.”

Bailey grinned, but his heart continued to pound nervously as they went upstairs. He pulled in a shaky breath, determined to make Logan aware of his fluctuating feelings. “I’m nervous.”

“Let’s go lie down. We’ll see what happens.”

“Yeah. Let’s do that.”

Logan led the way into the bedroom, and Bailey crawled into the middle of the bed. Logan lay down beside him, and they faced each other. A few lazy kisses later, Bailey wasn’t feeling very nervous anymore.

“I didn’t even know I needed you in my life,” Logan said softly. He touched Bailey’s cheek gently, then ran his thumb over Bailey’s lips. “I thought I was fine. I was fine. But I wasn’t good. And I definitely wasn’t great.”

“What do you mean?” Bailey asked.

“I was an alpha without a pack, and then I met you. I didn’t think I wanted a pack, Bailey. Not again. But with you, I know I can do it. I can be the alpha I need to be.”

Bailey honestly didn’t know what Logan meant, but he could tell the words were difficult, that they meant something bigger than he could understand. “Tell me.”

“I’ve never shared this with anyone before,” Logan said.

His eyes brightened with the blue of his wolf. Whatever had happened, it had messed with both Logan’s human side and his wolf. Bailey wasn’t even sure how he understood it, but he did. He could see it.

The doubt in Logan’s eyes, the old pain etched in the creased lines on his forehead—it all told a story Bailey was afraid to hear. But he knew Logan needed to talk it out. If the past few weeks of daily counseling had taught him anything, it was that sometimes wounds needed to be purged.

Hell, Bailey still wasn’t convinced the whole thing wasn’t his own fault. He’d known better than to go somewhere on his own. They’d talked about it. There was a buddy system. He’d ignored it and gone out into the dark behind a building by himself. Wasn’t that his fault?

He was working on it, and his therapist was helping.

“You can tell me,” Bailey said softly. “But you don’t have to. What we have isn’t going anywhere. You know that, right?”

Logan rolled onto his back and ran his hand over his face.

“No, Bailey. I don’t know that.”
