Logan (Chosen Champions #1) - Macy Blake Page 0,75
his eyes gave Bailey the heebie-jeebies. He stepped back and bumped into Logan.
“I would like to know how much longer this interrogation is going to last.”
Bailey glared and crossed his arms over his chest. “As long as I need it to last, Dasan. Don’t be a jerk.”
“Ask the question you want answered, then. Stop stalling.”
“I’m not stalling! Dragons, Dasan. Look at the giant dragon whose scales are really very pretty, which is odd when I think about it.”
“You want to know two things,” Dasan said softly. He stepped closer. “One, if we will hurt you.”
Bailey scoffed and scooted nervously closer to Logan. “Nuh-uh.”
“We will not. The alpha has accepted you as a member of his pack. And even if he hadn’t, you know us. We are no different than we were before you learned our truth. You were not afraid of us then; you should not be so now.”
“Don’t be all wise old owl on me, Dasan. You’re not a grumpy old man, no matter how much you pretend. Also, two things?”
Dasan nodded. “You want to know why Logan chose you. And that is a question the alpha must answer. You do not need us here for that. Come, Scout. Soup is a good idea. Let’s go find some.”
Coal shifted back and stretched. “You think there’s some more of that chicken chili stuff? I liked that one.”
“There is,” Bailey said. “In the freezer, on the bottom at the left. You’ll need two bags. There’s a loaf of bread in there, too, and some cheese and sour cream in the fridge.”
“We know, Bails,” Scout said. “Hey, you wrote the directions on the bags, right?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Come eat with us when you’re done making out with Logan.”
“I’m not going to—okay, we will.” No point in denying the truth. Bailey had no doubt he’d wind up with Logan’s tongue in his mouth and probably a few more hickeys on his neck.
The team filed out of the apartment, leaving Logan and Bailey alone.
“What a day,” Bailey said. “You know I’m going to tell you all about this when I wake up, right?”
“No doubt.”
“So you’re not even going to pretend this isn’t a dream?”
Logan gave him a weird look, and his forehead got all creasy and confused. “What?”
“The way I see it, this is my brain’s way of trying to tell me I have nothing to worry about. As long as I’m with you guys, I’m safe. I’ve created this whole supernatural mythology thing to reassure my brain that what happened won’t happen again because, ya know, claws and fangs and dragon breath.”
“Right. So it’s all a dream.”
“Yep. Seems reasonable.” Bailey looked at Logan, expecting him to argue further.
“Let me know when you realize it’s not, okay?” Logan asked.
Bailey grumbled and gave Logan a little push toward the couch. He managed to wiggle his way into his favorite snuggle position with zero protests from Logan.
“It was the wall falling,” Bailey confessed to Logan’s chest.
He really didn’t want to look him in the eyes when he told him what had freaked him out so bad. But he also kind of wanted to talk about it, and his counselor had told him it was healthy to talk about his fears, even if it made him uncomfortable.
Logan reached for his hand and tangled their fingers together. He raised Bailey’s to his lips and kissed his knuckles.
“It sounded like the dumpster lid. It always clangs when it closes.”
“That makes sense.”
“Yeah, I was just boom, right back at the theater. Except I remember what he said.” Bailey’s heart began to race.
“Do you want to tell me?”
“The only other thing he said was ‘Gotcha.’ Besides the reeking of wolf thing.”
Logan tensed but didn’t move. He pressed another gentle kiss to Bailey’s knuckles, but that was it.
“If he’s one of you, then he knew what you were, right? He knew you were a wolf, and that’s why I smell like you.”
Logan froze. “Yes.”
“So why attack me? Was he sending you a message? Was he after me all along? Did he get Ashley instead of me, and then Rebecca because you showed up and stopped him from getting both of us? Or was he pissed that you interrupted him with Ashley, got Rebecca, then Jeff, then finally got a way to get to me? Was he outside my window that morning? So he’s been stalking me for weeks?” Bailey’s breath caught as all the possibilities began to form. “Logan.”
Logan tipped Bailey’s chin back and met his gaze. His eyes flared the deep blue Bailey
